XKR Cleaning and Polishing Tips
Discussion
Hi, just got my XKR (07 plate). Absolutely love it, and want to really look after it
I had BMWs before this, so didn't look after it as much as I should have.
I want some advice on how to wash and polish it, and the best ways to keep the alloys in best order. I have read that Swisswax is the best? Is a jet wash too harsh?
Has anybody fitted stonechip protective film to the front of their car and the wing mirrors? Would you recommend it?
Cheers.

I'm not sure there's much difference between cleaning an XKR and a BMW except maybe the XK paint is slightly softer so you would need to go carefully if using a polisher.
FWIW, my rules are:
1/ always to clean it yourself and never be tempted to use automatic car washes or even third party hand wash services.
2/ apply pre-wash snow foam using a pressure washer and foam gun; leave for 10 mins (don't allow to dry). I use pH neutral Citrus Snow Foam.
3/ rinse off with pressure washer, keeping the nozzle angled and at least 8in away from the paintwork (never use a jet washer on tyres).
4/ immediately apply a good shampoo (I use Glossworkz), ideally using two buckets and two sponges, taking extreme care to rinse all grit from the sponges.
5/ rinse using a natural flow of water.
6/ dry using large, soft-edged microfibre ultra-absorbent towels laid flat and dragged across the surface.
7/ if required, use detailing spray and clay bar to remove stubborn impurities
8/ if required, polish in stages using a good quality wax (I use Chemical Guys Pure Concourse Carnuba Paste)
For the wheels, I use a product called Blue Rim and Wheel Cleaner after removing most of the dirt and dust with a hose brush. I also always carry with me a pack of the excellent Autoglym Bird Dropping Wipes.

In summary & without opening a can of worms regarding product recommendations...
1. Wash with foam & rinse, then leather or aqua-dry
2. Clay bar with lubricant (quick detailer) but only do this once a year at the most
3. Polish the paint surface with a polish or paint cleanser to improve the surface
4. Seal the new finish with a wax or sealant
Remember waxes are only a clear shield that protects whats underneath and adds depth and wetness. The quality of the paint finish is down to the polish/cleanser you use and the preperation to remove contaminents
Also you dont have to spend a fortune on products, but do buy some for these stages
Have fun
