Best Option? 2005 E46 Touring or A4 Avant?

Was looking at 06/07 plate Passats etc but keep getting drawn to the amazingly pretty (in my opinion!) E46 Touring and A4 Avants.
Two locally are decent prices (just over £7k) with low'ish (~60k) mileage. Ones a 320i Touring in grey, the other is a 1.8T Avant Ltd Edition in blue. Both lovely cars but not sure which would would be:
a) the better drivers car
b) the safer (if either as its going to be a family car)
c) biggest in the boot?
d) cheapest to run / insure etc
Any opinions?
