What-car. £1k - £1.5k Station car.

Hey gang,
Sorry for the dull thread.
I need to get myself a car that will 95% of the time be used to get me to the train station and home again. My budget is around £1k to £1.5k. I have no idea where to start but my criteria has two sides. I'd either like;
Fun to drive and fast-ish or;
Large and comfy.
The biggest requirement for me would be reliablity. It'll need to start at 6am on a winters morning and not take the entire journey to clear the windscreen, for example.
Oh, I'm a big chap too. 6' 3" and... ehem... stocky. So something like a 205-sized car would not be my choice (though the idea of a Mini appeals!)
To give some sort of idea of cars that may fall in to the above criteria, I'd say:
Fun etc = Toyota MR2 a la this week's Shed Of The Week
Large: Vauxhall Omega
Petrol consumption isn't a great concern as I'll not be driving that far.
Any ideas please?!

With regards to clearing the windscreen. Look at Fords, many have heated front screens which are an awesome idea that always boggles me why so few others offer it.Sorry for the dull thread.

As for fast and fun. How about a VVC converted Metro/Rover 100?? 143-190hp and lightweight. Also roomy too.
Luxury, well at this money you can't really beat a Lexus LS400 IMO.

My Mondeo served this purpose for 9 months while i was working on the Olympics.
Mines a 12 year old on an 'S' plate which after a breif check on Auto trader can be picked up for less than £600
Cant remember an exact time (and tbh i never timed it) but to clear the winscreen and windors of ice took about 5 mins. The heated windscreen doesnt melt the ice especially fast on its own but it will soften up the really frozen stuff in no time at all which makes scraping much easier.
Not overly fun but very reliable in my experience.

Lexus is a good shout, excellent cars and very reliable. A Metro though, really?
I think I'd be going for as decent a Volvo as the budget can stretch to, I've developed a thing for Volvos, for today at least.

PPS Just in case you are confused this is a shameless plug for a 9 year old Saab 9-5 2.3 LPT, 128,000 miles. Full Service History (sump dropped at 45k, oil changed at 6k intervals thereafter fully synthetic only), heated seats, ventilated seats, CD, Bluetooth, ipod connection, Leather, electric seats, rear blind, alloys, headlamp wash wipe, front/side airbags.
