Sorry we don't insure Rovers

I have never had this response from an insurance company until today. I can understand them refusing to insure specialist cars, classic cars, modified cars but a normal run of the mill Rover 214 just a blanket no for all Rovers! can't understand why! not a good sign for Rovers if this is common.

Combine largely aged driver demographic, prone to bumps, with falling availability of panels and such...

Probably lack of availability of parts meaning fixable damage on other cars means instant write off on certain Rovers.

I'm sure the mantle will be taken up by specialist insurance companies with more openness to repair rather than replacement of parts

Quite simple, insurance co won't insure a car that can't be fixed using genuine parts. As Rover died a long and horrible death several years ago due to making crap and being mismanaged since the 80's, there won't be any more genuine parts, ever.
