Hello,

I seeking some travel advice.

I'm travelling from Freuchie in Fife to Helensburgh this coming Saturday in order to collect a car and drive it back to Freuchie.

It has been suggested to me to travel to Stirling, then take to A811 via Drymen to Helensburgh, thus avoiding motorway speed restrictions and Glasgow. Looking at the road atlas it appears to make sense as it's a relatively straight drive 'as the crow flies'. However, having never driven the A811, is it a decent road to make speedy progress on or should I stick to motorways?

All views welcome

Thanks

Do it. I always use it.
You can also take in the A817 from Loch Lomond side to the Gareloch at Faslane, spanking road. One of Scotland's "must drive" roads.

Thanks for the advice.

Looking at AA autoroute I think you're referring to the A814 - if so then I agree. I test drove the car I'm collecting along this road and it's pretty epic what with long sweeping arcs and super smooth tarmac.

Ron,

Checking the guide, I realise I actually drove this section on my test drive. It's a great stretch of road. Interesting to note that it's owned by the MOD, maybe they should adopt other roads given how well made the A817 is? Chance would be a fine thing!

Just watch for cyclists on the road between Stirling and Drymen, particularly at the Stirling end. I personally think it's a bit of a daft road for them to use due to the speeds involved and narrowness, but the Stirling end is often used for time-trials and big group rides...
