is it wrong to love my bangernomics motor?

have a 97 mondeo 1.8 lx which i bought as a beater to get me out and about and not have to worry about it. but it has done everthing i have asked and more. yes it's 13 years old. yes it's an old ford. yes when it hits the magical 100 mph the dashboard vibrates like mad in a throbbing effect. maybe the fuel gauge and speedo have the odd day off but then they work so hard when operating i forgive them. the temp gauge has died a death and the only fully employed member of the dashboard is the tachometer which for me is the least useful but damn it i love it.
did 760 miles from germany in it yesterday and only discovered the fuel gauge not working when i got to london from middle germany on an 1/8th of a tank and thought.........my my she's economical after that slight oil top up. then thought about it and realised the mpg would be impossible. ah well.
got 4 steel wheels with winter tyres on in great condition from the scrappy for £40 which i thought was great. the common-ness of it meant said scrappy had 2 such vehicles which made me feel happy about breaking things in the future.
sure the rear view mirror keeps losing its stickiness on the screen and falling into passengers laps. sure the drivers side wing mirror glass lost its stickiness and fell of smashing it but i just pushed it on again.
but for long range comfort and having a nap in at service stations it is a winner. and quite fun on the welsh roads home.
am i getting old and becoming content with my lot? not sure. still desire an mx-5 but the second hand prices seem too weighty for my pikey-ness. and the saloon mondeo swallows all.

k buddy and its easier to put up with what you've got.I wouldn't say that I really love mine but it is staying. 650 quid over 2 years ago, now on 126,000 miles. Did Frankfurt - Milan and back at the weekend and as usual it didn't miss a beat. 55mpg and happily does 85mph with more to spare. Oil change once a year, usually at MOT it has needed a bit of work and money spent but all it costs apart from that is the fuel.

t and unreliable should think again. Mine's fairly similar - except '93 Mondeo. The rear view mirror I did have to re-stick, but it's not fallen off since then.
It occasionally has moods where it'll go through the MOT first time, but the last time it needed 5 attempts (first two failures were emissions, the second two failures was the N/S wishbone).
The fuel gauge, like yours, has been known to be temperamental (it suddenly dropped to zero for a few seconds, and occasionally, I think it stays on just under half-tank for days on end).
The speedo stopped working for 3 years (I only had it fixed because I had the clutch done and they wanted to make sure that the 10,000 mile warranty would be measurable).
The air conditioning packed up in 2007 (the compressor won't engage - its clutch doesn't work).
The anti-roll bar bushes are now worn quite badly (I'll replace them soon), so it clonks when one wheel goes over a bump when the other one doesn't).
But I don't want to get rid of it despite my mate (who's a mechanic) telling me to (oddly [or not], he doesn't have a working car, so who is he to tell me?)

she is like a cheap date and yes i am too tight to spend on a newer, nicer motor. a couple of cars ago i spent a good chunk of cash on something to last and it was the biggest nightmare of a motor yet. had it checked by the aa and all sorts but the engine gaskets went and so did a grand of my money.
really resent that car now and sold it to a mate but still want to kick it every time i see it.
and yes he knows the engine gasket seals have been done.

My Citroen ZX diesel is 16 years old, it does the job for me.
Mid 50's mpg on a mixed dive.
The nearside door mirror doesn't move & can't seem to move it without falling into the down position again.
It has a few scratches & dents hear & there, but I'm happy with it.
Had to spend a bit to replace the PAS pump.
I'm hoping to keep it for a while.

) doing what a car is designed to do and not having any real issues. Who'd have thought it??Had an r-reg mondeo 1.8 which was great. All my oney went on the Aston, so this thing never got washed. Hoowvered. I never opened the bonnet. It was filthy, but it kept going.
The wheel arches started to rot, and the alarm did a strange thing of setting itself off. Never did get to the bottom of it, so I just removed the alarm horn and let it flash itself to sleep each night. Quite cute really, and easy to spot in a supermarket carpark...
I p/ex it for the BM and lost £200 on the value. That was after 2 years, many '000 of miles and no maintenance. Great!

no gaffer tape yet but i've heard the bumpers are super brittle so got some on stand by just in case.
the car i bought to last was a 1999 audi a4 2.5tdi quattro auto with every tick on the box spec wise. the galvanised body impressed me for longevity. but after the oil leak and subsequent spending to repair it roughly double what i'd usually pay for a car really soured it for me. yes i am tight.
i paid £3000 for the audi 2 years ago. 112,000 miles and i have never had anything do wet roundabout like it but the quattro and auto box ate more fuel than i liked though i went in with my eyes open. planned to keep it forever but the big bill scared me when oil started to disappear again. told friend about this before sale and he was happy. he bought it for £2800. so only £1200 down but still quite a bit of cash in some respects.
still look back fondly at it. next car will hopefully be a honda accord as quite taken with their quality after having a blackbird bike.

I realy regret selling my X300 Jag, with 325,000 miles ! I sepnt £9.5k on a newer, 40k X350...and really regret the choice. I could have spent a few hundred quid on sorting the old one out, not worried about parking etc etc..and save d £9K !
Bangernomics is the way forward....I have never bought a car with less than a 100k miles before, and probably never will again !
PS My other car is a 1960 2cv....now that is cheap motoring, free tax & £60 a year insurance !
