6 months back my wife was hit by a 18 year old driver who had her owned her licence and new vehicle (10 reg Clio) for just a week. She reveresed in to my wife in a shopping centre car park no damage to our car at all but hes suffered a scuff. Being a novice she got out of the car and created a big fuss and even tried to call the police.

In the end her BF agreed that its not a big deal and that they would smart repair her car at their own cost and that things should be left at this otherwise her insurance will go through the roof.

My wife agreed and drove off. A month later we recieve a letter from our insurers saying that my wife hit someone. We explained the situation and the insurers did kick a fuss for us not reporting the accident but we argued that it was more of an incident that an accident and that we mutually agreed there wasnt sufficient damage to include insurers.

The case has now been open more than 6 months as that bh has told her insurers that my wife went in to her!

We have now recieved our renewal quote from our insurers and they have taken off my wifes NCB (3 years) and the quotes gone up more than 50%! Surely this isnt fair?

The case is disputed but if we end up winning this 6-9 months down the line then we would have been paying inflated insurance for no fault of ours!?!?

I've not rung them yet to ask this but wanted to get an idea from the PH massive as to where we stand?

Cheers lads

I think I've read something similar before where the outcome was your wife would have to pay the inflated insurance but be refunded if she was proven to not be at fault. It does sound unfair but from the insurers point of view what else can they do?

The women in the Clio is quite stupid too, if shes not done any damage to your car she's most probably at worst scuffed her bumper. Why would she claim on insurance? If shes a new driver her excess will be £600 minimum and the damage could not possibly be more than £300... Is there more to this than explained in the story?

Standard insurance practice to reduce NCB until claim is settled.

Depnding on the insurer non-fault claims can affect the renewal price, besy advise is to shop around at next renewal (although you probably do already! biggrin )

Welcome to the club.

I have 30 years of no claims and earlier this year, some dishonest bint pulled into my lane on a roundabout unexpectedly and a car had pulled off the slip road (as he didn't expect it either), she slammed on the brakes and I had to take avoiding action clipping the rear of hers with minimal damage.

I knew exactly what would happen so to be honest I was happy to resolve it between us and we agreed to do that. A week later, I get a similar letter saying I hadn't reported it and the matter now remains outstanding as the little gold-digger has put in a claim for whiplash thinking, as all these morons do, that it's money for nothing.

I just repalced my headlamps so no claim for me as it's a banger.

Premium last year with an insurance company strating with Z - £299. Renewal £1250!. Broker stumps up an alternative for £460. I've shopped round the internet and Co-op come up with £360 which is still ridiculous for a £500 car and seems to put me in the same risk category as a B51 tail gunner, much to my annoyance.

The additional problem I've found is these dumb-ass insurance websites very rarely offer you the appropriate scenario when they give you a drop-down menu to describe your accident - lots of scope there for arguing what you have and haven't declared.

Long and short is there's not much you can do. I suspect they may be claiming whiplash in the typically fraudulent manner of most claimants these days.
