My 2004 X5 Diesel has started to smoke when fired up from cold. The smoke is blue and hangs in the air behind the car (not the usual diesel soot). It's been getting gradually worse and is using oil. It dosn't seem to be happening once the car is warmed up.

I don't do many miles so I'm not sure exactly how much oil is being used, does this sound like the turbo failing? I think I can hear the turbo whistling more but that may be me noticing it because I'm now looking for problems.
The car is under warranty untill december, this may of course be useless but it's worth a try if it is the turbo.

On these engines they have like an Oil breather filter thingy (cant remember sepcific name) but it clogs up with oil . Replacing it improves the situation a lot and can stop the car from blowing smoke snd using too much oil

It should be IRC on the drivers side of the engine at the back behind the air filter.

Hope this helps

The car has 68k miles on it so I'm hoping it shouldn't be the valve guides, I'm offshore again now so I'll have a look at the breather when I get back.
