Should we ban drinking any alcohol for 1st 2 years driving??
Discussion
Following on from this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... which suggests stopping young drivers driving at night. Well banning people driving at certain times of the day just isn't feasible, but if we are really concerned about stopping teenagers stacking it into telegraph poles should new drivers, say up to the age of 21, not be allowed to drink any alcohol at all for the first 2 years of driving.
I know I was one of the first lot who passed a restricted bike test at 17 so I couldn't climb straight on a Fireblade like some older friends did and that had the desired result of bringing down death numbers for young riders.
I know Australian P-Plate drivers have a virtually zero blood alcohol limit as well as a lower speed limit when driving and it is accepted just because that's the way it is.
Thoughts people?

The people who drink drive and crash cars currently will continue to do so, no matter what restriction put in place.I know I was one of the first lot who passed a restricted bike test at 17 so I couldn't climb straight on a Fireblade like some older friends did and that had the desired result of bringing down death numbers for young riders.

When 17 we used to have drivers. They didn't drink alcohol if driving. Not once. We were out most evenings and there was 4-6 of us with cars.
The problem is much simply, but so much more difficult for certain people to grasp.
-People like having fun.
Since cars were invented people have sought ways to race and make them go faster.
For a young person there is no were to release this apart from car parks and public roads.
This WILL NOT change. It's part of human nature.
So instead of trying to stop it, the ONLY logical answer is to allow it in safer locations.
There are loads of deserted or part used old air fields across the country and other large areas. These should be opened up for people to legally race on. No cost, no safety equipment, no nothing and certainly no health and safety bods. Everyone goes there at their own risk.
But look at it this way, if person 'x' is going to race (take it as red that they are, because they will). Would you rather it was in a built up street, Tesco car park or some disused open ground outside of town?
The difficult bit is shifting perspective and learning, if you can't stop something, don't try. Just try and control it within your limited confines and abilities.
In addition, better driver training ans skid pad/car control should be made part of the driving test, in a 2 stage setup. On initial test and 6 months after. Then everyone should have to resit a more basic test after 5 years of holding a driving licence and then every 3 years from then on.
In short:
-make drivers better drivers
-Continually develop driving skills
-allow people somewhere to have some fun away from the public for free

Yeah, cuz having 10 pints and then driving home is like fine and stuff when you know how to drive proper
Have you actually read what I wrote? The reason for banning it for 2 years to start is education. If people get used to not drinking at all and having designated drivers when they are young then it becomes easier for them to continue to do that when they are older.

Let's just ban everything, that way no one will ever die!
I ban death. And I ban sweeping statements.Oh.
Oh crap a parado.....blip

Alcohol limits are alcohol limits, you should be under them if you are driving whether you are 18 or 80! Altering the limit to even less for younger driver is surely sending a message that a little alcohol is alright?
A more useful and productive question should be, should you have to take a driving test every 5 years?
My answer would be yes, half an hour every 5 years is nothing, and i bet it would save A LOT of lives, especially when you have some old duffers on the roads when they aren't fit to drive.
