I try to keep the miles down on my 2009 RS Focus and hence did not notice this until she had not been moved in about 3 weeks. 9,000 miles at the moment.

Got into the car and the lovely "new car smell" was gone, replaced by a stale smell - terrible. Anyway, looked around and found the carpet in the passenger footwell was wet (under the mat) - pretty wet actually.

I'm about to call ford about this now as I am quite upset - I loved the new car smell. Now I have a stained footwell carpet, and obviously a seal thats gone as well?

What do you think the warranty should (or will) do for me. Could I insist on new carpet after they fix the problem?

Thanks
Ronan

Not sure on Fords, but in the Mazdas (Usually MX5s) if the carpet wore out where your heel would be the carpet was replaced..

This could work for you, although if it comes with a re-enforced section there it may not work. This is if they won't replace the carpet obviously.

I fear you will end up with some bodge repair from a dealer with your old smelly carpet still in place. I guess the first thing is to find out exactly what has happened, is it simply a poorly fitted pollen filter from the factory? Or could it be a bulk head seam that has not sealed properly that requires the dash out? Once you know the severity I think you can then decide on what to do. Good luck, keep us informed.

Will do. Warranty man to ring me today. At the end of the day, under warranty, I have an expectation that the problem will be sorted as if it never happened. I'm usually pendantic when it comes to these things and tend not to give up easily!

Cheers

At the end of the day you've spent a lt of £££ on their top end product, the car needs to be restored to factory fresh IMO.

That will teach you not to use your car...they are meant for driving. If you want an investment try gold or art.

Agree nothing to do with lack of use.

I had a leak in my passenger footwell on my 04 Mondeo ST 220, it leaked through a poorly fitted bottom windscreen trim from the windscreen or pollen filter being changed.

Had to take the seat out and have a heater inside the car for 24 hours to dry the carpet out.

Take it back and get them to sort it, i'd be requesting new carpet!

Good luck

got to speak to my local Ford dealer today.......WAIT til you hear this crap......

..."water leaks are only covered for the first 12 months of warranty" - I swear tay ye. They will not cover any repair under warranty for my car.

The dealer was sound about it - he said they have been stung with Ford not paying them after the work was done! He gave me the number of the Ford Customer Relationship team, whom I called and were quite pleasant to deal with. They have opened a case and will "see what they can do for me" - car booked into local dealer next Thursday for inspection - will see what happens from there.

If all else fails, I'm taking this to the small claims court - only cost be £20 to £30 quid. IMHO, I think I am not being unreasonable to expect that a manufacturing defect should be corrected at the manufacturers expense, under warranty.

Will update when I have more...

I have a Mk2 Focus, not an RS though. I had a prolem with a water leak into the cabin, it was the drivers side on my car that was wet, back and front. And when I say wet, I mean REALLY wet.

Ford hit me with the same crap about the warranty, my car was about 2 and half years old at the time. I ended up spending a couple of hundred quid to have the fault repaired - eventually diagnosed as being the seals around the hatch hinges where they meet the roof. Quite common apparently.

I complained to ford customer service and they, without admiting liability, sent me a letter allowing me to get my next main-dealer service for free. Used the letter just the other day at Peoples Ford in Falkirk without issue - I imagine the bill for a 30K service would be over £100 so although I had to spend £200'ish for the leak repair it only actually cost me £100'ish in the long run.

I sympathise with the OP regarding the repair of the leak but I think going all-out for a new carpet is a bit much. My carpet was wet for weeks in my car before the leak was fixed and is absolutely fine now - no smell or any other indication that it was wet.

I work for Ford in service. Water ingress is a 1 year warranty. However, I am sure the garage you bought the vehicle from would be willing to fix the leak - I know we would on a car we sold ourselves. Going to a dealer other than the supplying for warranty/goodwill is a general no go.
Only trouble is, alot of customers went out of their way to get the RS...

  • UPDATE**
My local Ford dealer rang me. It appears that the "seam" (not a "seal") under the car is split. they cant even price it to fix it - it has to go to Ford in Belfast as they are the only dealer in Northern Ireland to do body repairs.

Waiting on Ford UK customer relationship team to call me to see how to proceed. I'm not impressed. I've never heard of a seam cracking. To me, this is not a water leak, but a structural fault, and a pretty significant one at that.

Really have no idea of wats coming down the line now...will keep this post updated as it happens.

A year old car with no accident history and a failed structural weld must be covered by warranty. If they try and give you some sort of excuse, don't accept it.

I'm sorry to hear of your woes, I hope you get it sorted out asap.

Agree with this. Has to be covered by warranty or going further, not fit for purpose?

Grounds to reject the car maybe? scratchchin

Yeah...thought about all these things so far, but need to wait and see what the final diagnosis is. I just want the car sorted ASAP and with minimal hassle. If they start to feck me around, I'll take the gloves off then and see who's left standing!

How does a seal splitting under the vehicle make water come in the car? confused

Look at any modern car and where two pieces are welded there is a seam of painted on ste to seal it, this sounds like what is missing straight from the factory.
