Quick Questions Re. MOTs

Cars due its MOT on Friday, and yesterday I realised one of the tyres is 'Marginal' on tread. Am I ok to put the spare on (and have 3 alloys and a steelie) and not have a spare?

I've tried to get a new tyre but it looks like that wont happen until Saturday

Yeah they are, its not the same tyre though, its a p6000 ditchfinder. Good job the MOT place is less than a mile away!

I've just had a look and its the same, so it should be fine.

the only requirement is that the size is the same, speed rating load index etc aren't checked.

Nearly.

You can have different size wheels/tyres on the rear axle than the front axle. Many SuperDooperCars have bigger stuff on the rear. But you can't have 1 big one on the OSR and a normal on the NSR say.

One optimistic Kwik Fit branch manager once tried to convince me that a car with different-size tyres fitted front/rear would fail an MOT.

Tyres can be different front to rear, but both wheels on each 'axle' must be fitted with tyres the same size.

Little update to the story, went to put the spare tyre on, didnt have the right wheel nuts. Swore a but, then thought sod it i'll stick a part worn on for the test, so put the wheel back on dropped the car and went to drive out of my drive. At which point a found out one of the brake lines had split, seemingly all on its own.

Perhaps a good job it went there, and not out on the road, but there we are. So the cars in the garage with its marginal tyre and no brakes and i'm waiting for a massive bill.

In the meantime i've been offered a quite reasonable 1.2 litre Mk2 Punto Shed, with a 12 month MOT. Given all of the money i've had to throw at the Puma, it's not half tempting.
