Just about to order one on a business lease. Its so depressing when you look at the options list at things that I think should be as standard and certainly are on the XF. On a 3 year lease, 16K a year its £760 ex VAT/ month with the extras below:

Heated Front Seats (FOC upgrade) 19"
Style 351 Alloys Media
Package Professional Advanced Fine
Brushed
Aluminium Interior Trim Visibility
Pack Sun
Protection
Glass Sport
Auto Transmission

Seriously thinking of changing my mind to the Jag equivalent at over £100 less a month.

Any advise welcome!?

The Automatic transmission is optional ? I didn't think they sold manual 535d's (or any other model with that engine) because of the torque.

Avec flappy paddles ? Don't really see the point of that on a diesel car.

The box itself is supposedly brilliant. Whether or not you chose to use the paddles is a matter of preference.

From memory its a small cost upgrade.

I assume there's a man who's never driven a BMW performance diesel with SAT?

Try it......you'd be amazed.......

And impressed yes

Well I've been driving a BMW performance diesel since 11/2004....had one of the first 535d's in the country and currently have an X5 SD...which I reckon means I know what the 35d engine is capable of as much as anyone! True I haven't driven one with the SAT. I know the eight speed box has had rave reviews and I wish my X5 had it. I see SAT costs £110 more on the 535d....to be honest I don't know exactly how much better SAT is over the regular gearbox but I just can't see BMW selling anything that transforms the driving experience for £110.....it's not what they're in business for!

I drove both versions today and there is a big difference. The Sport box has different shift modes and options as well.

Well to all intents and purposes they do!

Well worth it. I'd have had it on my LCI 535d when i ordered it only it wasnt an option when i bought it - it was only £75 then - inflation, eh?

There is a massive difference in boxes, and I've never understood why they charge so little to add such value.

It's BMW's equivalent of DMG. Lighting fast changes and worth every penny.
I thought it was simply paddles and new software and the main box was the same?

The BMW equivilent of 'DMG' (Do you mean DSG?) is the DCT transmission which isn't offered on the F10?

Not simply paddles, but a totally different gearbox.

It's not like the M5 where essentially you have an electronic clutch engaging and disengaging very quickly for you (and the noticable 'clunk' etc), but very similar to the VW gearbox. Simply super fast gear changes.

I'm not sure how it works, but it does!

When you go into sport, the throttle is also mapped slightly differently and the steering is also effected and it feels heavier.

I dont understand. How can it be very similar to the VW gearbox? Its totally different? It's a torque convertor automatic whereas VW's DSG is a twin clutch system?

BMW's DCT is very similar to the VW system I agree but SAT isn't DCT it's a torque convertor automatic with paddles?

I was suggesting the speed and feel is the same.

I've no idea how it works, as I've stated wink

How the German marks get away with the options thing is beyond me, we had to put £5k worth of options to bring our 330d touring up to the same level as an X type which would of made the X type £12k cheaper!

I have to admit that we do like our 330d and I would recommend one but as your after a 5 series saloon, then I would recommend the XF.

What did you add thats fitted as standard to an X-Type diesel? And of course the X-Type is cheaper, the X-Type diesel is a 155bhp 2.2! Hardly comparable to your 330d?

It would probably been about £20K cheaper to get a Mondeo but thats not relevant either.

I think he means comparable as it's a similar size and that's the top option on engine spec.
Strictly speaking he should have compared the 320d plus options v 2.2ford unit. Hardly fair comparing a 231bhp 500nm car to a 155bhp 300nm with a ten second over boost to 350nm plus fed v rwd. Rwd is more costly like for like.
