Does anyone know of any agencies in the area who you can go to for casual temporary work. Like ring up and get an assignment for the next day / night type thing.

Nothing too exciting just general manual labour type jobs.

Looking for work while I'm back at uni but I don't want to commit to too many hours with a company so could do with something casual

Finding work is not going to be that easy! From an agency employer perspective they will want to know that you are good for their clients, can do the job, are trustworthy etc. They will also need to do all the usual checks etc. As you can guess a phone call on the day isn't going to get all this done. You might find some unscrupulous agencies or employers but they are likely people you will not want to work for out of choice. Do the leg work and do it right.

I understand that but I meant in the way of staying with a particular agency so they always have me on record and know what type of work I can do etc

The agency i work for (No where near you) would keep you on the books providing we knew when you were available or if you took the odd job we offered. If you kept turning down work, you'd be got rid of most likely.
Just go in, get registered, explain the situation and all should be ok. Just be flexible and let them know roughly what you're looking for/ can do.

Thats the sort of thing I'm looking for, somewhere that can offer me regular work, say 15-20 hours most weeks, but that I could easily cut back if I needed to.

You can also try local events, hotel or catering companies. They will often have a pool of workers, mainly on zero hours contracts. They will call you for work as and when they need to.

As a temp you can do what you like. However, messing people around will get you dropped VERY quickly. Also keep in mind most work is 9-5 so you'd probably be waiting for a bit, or have to do a whole day here or there.
