Looking at doing the Oulton Park day on 17th November with MOT. Thing is, it's £149 for non members but Circuit Days have the same event at the same price but you get a 20 min lesson thrown in (MOT charge £25) I've had a lesson from them at Anglesey and it was rather good.....

I'm also considering Oulton Park / Anglesey.

I've not done either before but both look like they would suit the MX5

Mondello Park, 12 November. Got a "new" car coming in a week. Not sure if I'll take that or the MX out. May see if I can take both biggrin.

What do you all do about trackday insurance? I was looking at the Brands Hatch day on 3rd December but got a terrible quote from my ins co to cover me for the day - any ideas?

Really?

I've only ever been on days using their own cars, never mine. Isn't there a slight risk you might damage it or someone else's? Or roll off in a blazing inferno?

Everybody takes the risk of their own car. Even if you have track insurance and have a bump with someone else you only claim for your own car.

Given a early MX5 is worth somewhere around £1000. It's hardly worth insuring.

Do you intend to drive way beyond your own abilities?

It's as much risk as you want to take.

The only time I've ever been off track, also involved car to car contact. My friend was driving... and was trying to copy my speed/lines. Problem was, although I'm a novice, I had done 10+ days, and 3 at that track. It was his first ever day, and first ever lap. He went in too quickly, lost it, and as we were sliding sideways across the grass, I looked across him and saw the porsche make exactly the same error. Ironically, if we hadn't, he probably wouldn't have.

I'd still maintain though, that unless you are pushing your limits, off track - possible. Off track into barrier - unlikely, Car to car accident - not likely. (At a well marshaled day...)

I learnt many lessons that day. frown Among them, make sure you clarify who pays for damage if allowing anyone else to drive... And start slowly!

No, but finding the limit (yours and the car's) is what it's all about and to find it, you need to overstep it a little, no?

That's the fun of doing it in a 19 year old, 1.6 litre MX5 - the speeds aren't that great and it doesn't cost a fortune to fix, not that I'd put myself or anyone else at risk.

I must admit I'm surprised, I thought everyone took out track insurance, but a sensible approach from everyone is reassuring and Mazda On Track seems pretty well organised. Can't say I fancy walking home anyway....

I'll overstep the limit on an airfield trackday, but on most UK circuits the armco / grass / gravel is never far away so 8 to 9 tenths is as hard as I like to push.

Very true... and maybe, as I normally have to drive home after, maybe I do take it a little easy.

But, I think unless you are really pushing it, you can (certainly for your first few days) explore your limits without really risking a bend.

I'm hoping to get my '5 back in early November, and will do some more days after then. I tend to do more from Oct-March than in the summer, there are more on Saturdays and they're cheaper.

To add:

At only my second day in the '5, as posted in the poor driving thread... hehe

Opps!

I didn't go off track though!
