The setup in most V8 wedges requires that the filter has a built-in non return valve which will stop the oil running back into the sump when the engine is not running.

Then when the engine starts up the pump has to fill the filter first before any of the lovely stuff hits the bearings, the cam and the hydraultic tappets. This could cause premature wear.

The problem is worse for TVRs that often aren't used for a while between runs.

There are some filters on the market that don't have the valve, any untried filter type should be checked. Ask the retailler before buying.

Good point and thanks

here is the reply:

yes the filter has built in relief valve in the base - and yes it does include an "anti backflow valve" (as it is described by Fleetguard) this is to stop oil draining from the filter canister if you were using it "upside down" with the mounting threads facing downwards.

Yes - the scientist in me wonders why there's no scale on the microscopy picture of the second oil sample. What is the size of particle it lets through, then?

How much does it take to clog the filter and what happens then?

All things being equal the fibreglass filter will outperform a paper element filter, the type of fibre is important and filters can be selected to filter down to 5 microns,or the bar can be raised up to 40 microns, this type of filter is standard on modern V6 and V8 Jaguars,an American firm Velcon have been making this type of filter for many years so google them to be better informed,I am not that impressed by research done by joe bloggs who cut a piece up and said this is great. smile

Thick had on this morning. At what size does it not matter (bits in the oil) and does it restrict flow. Just thinking out loud.

Been using moroso filters up until a few years ago.
