PistonHeads Land Rover Night Drive: 13/11/10

Join us at Eastnor for some after-dark fun in Land Rovers

We’ve had our Land Rover Defender for 5 months now, and it has changed the driving habits of most of us. Instead of flying around the local back roads looking for the ultimate set of corners, we trundle along them in the Landie looking for opportunities to deviate from the tarmac and get onto some mud. At least that was Mr Will's excuse when he was caught in a deserted car park late at night recently….

Off-roading is great, but you need more than just a gentle amble around the countryside - you need to have a challenge. Here at PH, we laugh at those who only venture out in daylight as we like to get grubby under the cover of darkness too (much like Mr Will), and with the help of our friends at Land Rover we present the PH Off Roading 'Night Edition' which takes place on Saturday 13th November.

We'll start off at dusk, and will drive into the darkness of the Eastnor estate, where steep inclines and river passes will seem a whole lot more difficult. To make it even more of an adventure we'll be stopping somewhere in the dark forest to have a coffee and get our feet muddy.

We’ll be driving the latest high-spec Discovery 4s on the night, and we'll use them to explore 5,000 acres of countryside surrounding Eastnor Castle, using over 25 miles of track that has been specially designed to push the Landie to the limits. All cars are equipped with Hella spotlights to show the way, but that’s all we’ll have to help find our way around – so it should be a proper laugh!

Full Programme

15.30: Arrival at Land Rover Experience for refreshments and registration

15.45: Guests will receive a short safety briefing.

16.00: Guests are shown to vehicles and commence off road drive.  A coffee hamper will be taken out with the convoy to have en route. Groups will return to the LRE HQ for dinner during the evening

21.30: Convoy returns to the HQ for a warming brew to wrap the evening up. (convoy may be back later than advertised: driving conditions dependent)

We can only accept 12 PHers for this drive, and the cost to join us on the night is £225 incl VAT.

To book, please call 01531 638779 and quote PistonHeads.

Could do with a few more details. How many minutes driving time do we actually get? What is the format (is it one driver per vehicle with one instructor) sat next?

Shame no passengers allowed.

The last one I went on they had three drivers to one instructor and you got out and swapped regularly. It was quite good because you could learn from the back seat as well...

Well... 5.5 hours total time, take out coffee/dinner and call it 4 hours shared between 3 people, so the maximum would be around 90 mins. I guess there will be various bits of theory and discussion, driver swapping, etc, so would expect it to be around an hour of driving.

I prefer my driving experiences to be in the day with slicks, but if nobbly tyres and mud are you thing, this is probably a good laugh. If you have two mates you could do it with so you can get a whole car, it would be awesome fun. smile

I was a passenger with Riggers and Chris-R. Even as a passenger it was great fun to hang on during inclines and suchlike, you still get all of the feelings of excitement but can look out at the passing water, rather than concentrating on the drive.

It's the only time where I can honestly say that being a passenger is just as much fun as driving.

Well, you can probably include the Docklands Light Railway in that too, since the drivers only press a button to close the doors smile

That sounds superb, if I wasn't taking the weekend before off for BTaP I'd be there like a shot.

Been greenlaning and off roading with my brother and I can honestly say that it is a pleasure to be a passenger - I would not want to drive to be honest, its not like road driving, different levels of consentration are required. I would rather sit back and enjoy! you don't steer rollercoasters do you?! lol

Really wanted to come along to this, as we have done several events at the LRE at Eastnor and its one of the best venues ever!!

Only problem is that its also the same weekend that the Rally GB is on this year, so I guess we will be having a night out in Cardiff or some other place in Wales that day.

Have a great time, driving in the dark is so much more fun and exciting!!

Cheers,

Nige.

Sounds right up my street. Never done the Camel Rally and this is probably the closet I'll get. Are there youtube videos so we can get a preview of what to expect, also is there swamps and lakes or fords to cross? The whole thought is getting me all excited. There is a rough map of the course, as I want to make sure its value for money before I book up. ;-)
