One of my favourite places that I've ever visited is the town of Roermond in the eastern Netherlands, it is full of character and a lovely place to visit, especially in the summer when you can lounge around the narrow streets, getting pleasantly 'tipsy' and imagining the place as it was back during wartime.
I'm sure there are many, many other places out there that are well worth a visit but stay well below the usual tourist radar so do feel free to share them!

A couple of years back we discovered the Yorkshire Dales and, in particular, a wonderful hamlet called Newbiggin where a fabulous self-catering place called Westburn Cottage is. We went back the following year and, I expect, will visit over and over again in the years to come. The people are wonderful, the pubs pleasant, the beer good, the local food is excellent and the walking is exceptional.
Oh... and when in Castleton (Peaks, not Dales, we visit on the way back) for the ridge walk, Blue John mines and scenery stay here: The Samuel Fox Inn. Fab.

Me and the girlfriend flew out to Malaga with absolutely no plans other than just go whever we wanted in Andalucia. We did our own thing just arriving places and booking into cheap but amazing hotels. Because it is not full of tourists it really felt like we were discovering a hidden gem (we went end of May so might be a bit different say in August).
We travelled by bus, train (public transport is briliant out there) and scooter!
Visited Malaga, Torremalinos, Nerja, Granada, Rhonda.
All brilliant in their own ways. Malaga is definately under rated - the old town is beautifull and a real sense of how the spanish live as it is not really built for tourists.
Overall, there was much more of a sense of adventure than I ever got when visiting SE Asia, and more enjoyable.
I don't want to return incase it doesnt live up to memories, but going to try northern spain next / france / croatia.
