Hi,

Just wondering what sort of differences there are in the driving characteristics of these two?

Also which one people thing is the better buy for about 15-16k?

Cheers in advance!

1 series coupe possibly the ugliest car to ever come out of bmw, looks even worse in the flesh than in photos.

Three series coupe always looks good in a subtle, stylish way that a 1 series coupe never could.

I was stuck in traffic today and noticed 4 i series coupe's within about 7 cars lenghts, all same spec (120d) and similar colours (dark).
From the rear these cars look utterly hideous.
It was odd to see 4 of them all together in traffic, then I looked at the drivers (all identical demographic) and then I realised where we were and what time it was;

I was stuck in traffic surrounded by Foxtons Estate agents in their 1 series! All on their way to their regular friday night post works drinks meeting. Had to laugh if ever there was a driver that summed up a model there is was - Foxtons middle managers, complete with big notted ties, shinny suits and naff showy bmw. (ps I love bmws had a few of them and not anti bmw in any way).

Get a 330.

Completely irrelevent rant since they never put the -30i engine in the 1 coupe (125i and 135i only in the UK and 128i/135i in the US).

Therefore the OP is talking about the 1 hatch, which IMO is marginally less bland than the 3 series coupe (the dreariest, least intetresting car BMW make) and is slightly more involving too drive too. The 130i is a great car, the 330i is a great engine in a good car.

Oops my mistake, so the quick 1 series coupe is the 135? Not the 130, which is only available in hatchback (which I quite like the idea of, a 200+ bhp rwd hatch! whats not to like. I'll have to eat my words and get my coat! bye........)

Just dont buy a 1 series coupe!

I had a similar dilemma around a year ago.

I found the 3 series coupes to be the more timeless, elegant car and almost certainly a nice car to own; however, I did not find them remotely exciting or interesting. Pleasant to drive sure, but not particularly sporty or fun.

130i (make sure it's the M Sport) was completely different. Probably not quite as good a car in many ways as the 3 coupe and not as good looking. However, the 130i is an absolute hoot to drive and so much more fun and interesting than the 3 series. It's where my money went and I've no regrets whatsoever.

Oh, and pre facelift 130i is less around 215grams CO2, so costs just over £200 a year to tax.

Looks: that's an easy contest - the 130i is hideous and the 330 quite nice looking. At least in my opinion.

Driving: 130i for me. It drives beautifully.

Comfort, practicality etc: 330i. The 130i seat doesn't go low enough, the steering wheel doesn't extend far enough and the boot and rear seats are surprisingly small given it's only a few inches shorter than the 330i.

I'd get yourself down to a BMW dealer and have a close look at both cars.
