Very impressed with the police tonight.

Earlier on tonight as I was getting into bed I heard a load of clicking/metallic scratching/general fiddling happening outside. Looking out the window I saw a bloke wearing a hoodie - with his hood up - sitting in the passenger seat of next door's car. I'm not best friends with my neighbour but we are on "courteous hello" terms and recognise the people who come and go from his place, and didn't recognise this person. They then started opening a rucksack and looking at various electronic devices and generally rooting about inside.

All this combined made me pretty suspicious so I decided to call the plod - some of you may say I should have grown a pair and gone out and confronted the person but, frankly, I didn't fancy much the possibility of getting stabbed while in my dressing gown by some pikey scrote! The woman on the other end of the phone was great and reassuring as I started to feel more and more stupid for phoning as it was probably just my neighbour's mate or something. The car had also left our car park while I was on the phone making me feel more like I'd wasted police time.

Still though within about 3 minutes they had got a car out, located and pulled over the car in question and confirmed the person driving was correct - which I was very impressed with being as I couldn't supply a reg plate, just model and colour - and it's a Friday night.


Good to know that there's a chance of getting your P+J recovered so quickly if it's ever taken (and someone was fortunate enough to witness it and call the plod immediately).

I don't think that makes it clear, is that saying the person driving was as correctly predicted by you a thieving pikey , or saying the person driving was correct to be driving it as he had permission?

Had this a few months back. Walking home I saw 3 twunts breaking into an old Peugeot. Rang the police once I was around the corner on the road. Not even a minute later a plod car came barreling down, no lights on (guessing so as not to let them know they're coming?). This was on the very dark hours of a Saturday too.

Conversely, when my mum's car got nicked off the drive, and she saw it, they didn't want to know at all.

I think it's always worth calling if you're unsure. You are only reporting what's happening, it's then up to the police what to do with that info.

A while ago i saw some youths with a ladder up against a first floor window to one of the flats in the same block I live in. I've never seen these kids before so rang the police non-emergency number. I said to them it might be totally innocent (especially as it was broad day light at a fairly big block of flats), but I've never seen the kids before so thought i better phone it in. They said they were really grateful for my call, and 5 minutes later a police car turned up to check it out.

Well done to the OP for doing something. Agree with not wanting to go outside and face the person, seems too much of a risk these days with the amount of pikey scum that carry knives.

when they phoned back to tell me what had happened I expressed how stupid I felt, but the operator said they were grateful and better they answer ten false alarms than miss one real theft - and not to feel discouraged to call again.

I am glad to hear that as that is the attitude I would hope they had.

If I was the neighbour, it'd put them on mine. I'd be pleased to know someone was (a) keeping half an eye out and (b) gave enough of a fk to do something about it (rare, sadly).

I'd probably give them my phone number too though, so next time they can check first!
