My new 330i compared to my old 330d & 330i
Discussion
Not war and peace but keen to share what the differences are between my e90 330d/e46 330i and my new e91 330i (258bhp) after spending a week together.
Compared to the 330d the new car feels much smoother and is also a fair bit quieter. It doesn't feel as quick but watching the speedo it's certainly faster (diesel torque hiding petrol power). Thought i'd miss the torque pull but auto box masks the deficit very well. The balance of the car is better with the nose having less weight so feels more agile. The sound is fantastic and throttle response is in an instant, plus having more rev range and the smooth delivery somehow makes the car feel better/classier, (hard to explain but driving back to back there is something?!?) Mpg 35.3 to Cambridge and back and having spent 85miles driving around Birmingham yesterday it dropped to 31 (with some pushing in-between). Would see 40 overall in 330d so pretty impressed.
I still love the 330d as the diesel engine is fantastic, economical and surprises many people with it's pace. I have always sang it's praises but if your not doing 15-20k plus a year the petrol wins!!
Now the improvement over my e46 330i is huge. The gearbox is the biggest improvement. Much softer, more intuitive, isn't always dropping a gear when wanting to pick up speed. The box drives much more like a auto manual rather than full auto in that there seems to be negligible impact from the torque converter compare to old. The pick up/gear change is far quicker as well. The new engine doesn't sound quite as nice at low revs but is lovely towards end of range as seems keener to get up there. The car feels lots lighter accelerating and braking. Ride better in e46 but removing the runflats should level things out.
Very happy as you can probably tell and will post some pics tomorrow once I've spent Sunday morning detailing....
