............finally sold the pile of crap they call a Land Rover Defender 110 (07 Puma). Even worse than the Frontara I bought in 1993. Off shopping for a Toyota Hilux tomorrow!

I have a 2010 Puma 110 Utility thats done 3K and so far so good.

Most important I think is only own one in warranty.

Bought it in January with 47,000 miles on the clock. By June it had had a new clutch, new gear box, new rear hubs, Various new UJ's, new turbo, new intercooler, new intercooler hoses, new turbo to cat pipe (pardon the terminology if incorrect), faulty brakes rectified, and other more minor stuff. Was at the dealers more than I had it. At least it was all done under warranty with no quibbles whatsoever so that was a good thing. As I was using it for work it proved just too unreliable so it went up for sale in July when the warranty expired. Its probably going to be OK from now on with all the work that has been carried out but I just didn't want to take the chance. Sorted out the spec of the new Toyota so will be ordering it tomorrow.

Like my mate in OZ warned me before I bought it,"If you want to go into the bush, take a Land Rover. If you want to get back, then take a Toyota!"

Mmm Toyota, hav'nt the just had two major recalls for most of their vehicles. Your Landy sounds like its in the minority. Out of the frying pan and.........

Well I did tell you not to buy the one with Big Wheels, Roof rack and flashing beacons on it didn't I

Dave. if it is any consolation....

Mine has had, Full clutch assembly, New gearstick assembly, 3 x rear diffs, yep 3. New axle assembly at rear including all renewed axle bearings. New sump. New prop UJ. new front grill due to corrosion, anti corrosion rectification to front end. 29k miles covered!!

now I know you are a rough arsed bugger, so I would expect some breakdowns, but I on the otherhand....

My gearbox still feels like stirring a pudding basin after the first hour of driving in the morning. My warranty is out in November. I may extend for another 12 months. I still like it though and that is the perverse thing about a landy.

Another mate has one and has all the previously listed gripes as well, Including a new gearbox.

If I keep it I will buy a horse whip so I can self harm. C'mon dave at least it was more reliable than the TVR's

Sure Landrovers are not the most reliable but dont think you have bought into something which will never break as Jeremy Clarkson would have you believe!

Yes, I agree they are pretty poor and the Toyota's are probably more reliable. But they do have their problems as well and I thought the Defender coming to the rescue was quite funny given the Defenders rep.

I drove my Defender to Italy this summer and it was faultless...oh apart from the flat battery on the drive at home before setting off at 2am......pesky fridge/freezer :-)

116000 Hilux's have just been recalled over here.

The recall affects all four-wheel-drive Hiluxes produced between January 2005 and February this year.

Something to do with the rear propshaft support brackets breaing off on bumpy roads.

Steve, Funnily enough I don't believe everything what Clarkson says . As heightswitch said, I don't expect a working vehicle to break every time I use it! Even the four TVR's I have had have never broke down.

From the discussions I have had with other tradesmen who use the Hilux pickup they are 100% happy with them. Sure, the odd one has had a problem like with any other vehicle but generally they are streets ahead of (modern?) LR's in terms of reliability.

I also have a Renault Trafic and a Master. Each one has over 50,000 miles on them and they have never let me down. They just get serviced and nothing breaks. Why can't LR make vehicles like that?

More likely the first 47,000 miles were ragged to death on the motorway.

No problems with my 07 defender... an excellent vehicle and wouldn't consider going back to Japanese pickups...too old to be bounced around !!
