Our local Safety Camera partnership is running ads on prime time TV presenting Safety Cameras as smiley-faced animated heroes. The argument being they are heroes because they prevent accidents and free up money up for other health priorities such as baby care units.

I'm not impressed by them wasting money on prime time adverts. I'd rather this money, and the money for setting up and maintaining all the cameras they keep installing was spent on more traffic police!

Under the DfT guidelines, the scamerahips were advised to spend 5% of income on PR...

5% of millions is a lot of money

Which is ironic, given that they cause accidents and use up money that could have been used for other health priorities such as baby care units

I guess they've paid for these before the end of the financial year.

Theres only so much money they can lose in new offices etc and being seen to turn a huge profit wouldn't do them any good at all. Far better for them to waste the money.

Precisely. Money returned to the treasury is 'lost' money, and large surpluses give scope for negative pr.
Likewise they don't want to run a deficit as the partners have to make this up. Devon & Cornwall (IIRC) have this down to a fine art. They returned ~£568.
Like all beauraucracies, their ideal is to spend as much as possible, thus generating their own expansion.

And the next instalment....

£87,000.00 wasted on "Speed Cameras Save Live" leaflets. (per "Mail" page 21)

London Scammers have leaflet with "talking scamera" spouting that...

"Speed causes over a quarter of all deaths in London"

and

"It is proven that where I operate drivers slow down and I reduce death and destruction by 30%"

They also allegedly illustrrate a fit lifeguard's body with a scamera for his head. Caption across his muscle toned chest reads:

"Speed Cameras Save Lives"

Our Paul safespeed says: "Irresponsible! No evidence that they save lives. Dangerous propaganda"

(That is cos you got 'em rattled, Liebchen )

RAC's Edmund King: "More helpful to send leaflet with practical advice such as "WEar a seatbelt!"

The Prats claim they are trying to tell people why they need speed cameras

Hah!

Well, Cous' has placed thread on safespeed's site asking for ideas on "Think! campaigns" as in

"WHAT DO WE WANT TO SEE ON THE TELLY!"

So! What kind of realistic and practical adverts do we want?

er Actually yes. The hedgehogs are a modern green cross code man. It's about educating the little scrotes not to play in the chuffin' road.

All part of education rather thean penalising the citizen.

But they do not work!

Want proper people - actually teaching "Stop Look Listen"

That advert does not work.

I cannot catch the lyric of the song, nor can my 6 year old.

Cousin (Deputy Head) in 11-18 comp (and goes out to feeders) - very hot on Green Cross and Cycling Proficiency - spends huge chunk of her budget on road safety - finds this advert does not get message across at all. In fact - she has yet to meet one child who can sing along with Hattie

Want alternative!

Campaign not hard hitting enough! Type of adverts I used to see on UK TV, Swiss, French, German and Austrian TV (am half Swiss cheese - brought up over there ) left you in no doubt whatsoever that crossing roads - without looking, at bends, blind bends, in front of trams, buses, between parked cars could darned well kill you!

That is what I want to see.

Look at my husband's post on safepeed's site for my own child's example of what consitutes a good hedgehog advert!

You will find it in "Anonymous" section as it was originally placed there by my cousin - the Deputy Head who has not joined the site - as we already have two puss cats on there!

(There is another one on here too! )

Can think of lots of adverts I want to see - and all would be good use of money!

Edited to say:

And they need to be on the telly more often too!

Give them enough rope and you can eventually complain to the Advertising Standards Authority for misleading the public. Can't wait.

I seem to recall it already has been. If I remember rightly because they used Government supplied stats it couldn't be challenged.
