Any recommendations for a product to clean the paintwork of the engine bay? It's ingrained road / engine dirt and I doubt it's been washed or cleaned there in 20 years. It's not at all greasy, but quite dry. I've tried with Meguiars paint cleaner on a small adjacent area with the same problem, and it does eventually remove the dirt, but takes an awful lot of effort to do so by hand. Machine cleaning is not really an option.

You need Bilt Hamber Surfex HD, which can be used neat or cut with water and will pretty well clean anything without causing any real harm. Just rinse, dry and dress afterwards.

TFR (traffic film remover) found in most car parts places of the industrial variety. Mix that with about 20% petrol added with a good shake in a pressure sprayer & its amazing at cleaning up engine bays & grime. I've no idea what chemical reaction it produces but its mega stuff!!

Someone will probably tell it makes acid rain or agent orange now hehe

Bilt Hamber Surfex HD - very cost effective, as you'll probably only need to use it at 20-25% strength to clean the engine bay with a soft brush to agitate the solution.
