Hi everyone

Well, I now have an intermittent (sp?) tickover problem with the car. Stepper motor has just been cleaned by the good chaps at Racing Green, so the problem to me, someone inept with a spanner, is not as easy as I first thought..

OK, symptoms as follows..

It starts up and runs fine and happily ticks over, annoying the neighbours whilst it does so

Once the engine warms up, all is fine, but after a while whilst braking, the revs drop a little, but when stood stationary (traffic lights, junctions etc) the revs drop, stay at about 6-800 revs, then shoot up to about 1800-2000, then drop dead, and cut out. If I am quick I can catch them with the throttle, which then makes people think I want a race from the lights,,

Any ideas?
Cheers

Its very quiet ?? Not a response in sight ??

My suggestion would be based upon you indicating that it only occurs after/during braking ??

It may be that your Brake Servo is "leaking", the diaphram that is and causing the Plenum to act as if it had an air leak and the ECU trying to compensate.

You could also look around the Plenum to see that all pipes/seals are intact ?? A small air leak will not have much of an impact when cold as so much additional fuel is being supplied to a cold engine, but when warm, it will raise and lower low running speeds quite significantly.

Jues a suggestion but... I had the same problem, cleaned the stepper to no avail. Took it in for its service and asked them to look at it. They replaced the carbon filter and it has been fine ever since. Another side effect of carbon filter problems is a vaccume in your fuel tank (mine would go 'bang!' after a fast drive when the tank was less than half full). I only had the engine cut out problem when the engine was hot and I was at a standstill. This was on a 93 L Chim so it was an old car.

Where's the carbon filter? And thinking about it I sometimes get a little bang. oooo-er obviously.. Mine too only happens when stationary.

It happens when the car is stationary, and dips a bit when braking, so I don't think it is the brakes that are at fault..

Disconnect the stepper motor once the engine is up to temperature and idling happily. If this cures the problem it must be a fault in the road speed sensor, stepper motor, wiring or ECU. If not, you may be looking at an air leak, possibly in the brake servo.

Its probably correct as it obviously has been looked at by Racing green, but the stepper can only work properly if the base idle is set right. Also the ECU has no information as to where the stepper actually is it controls it by cycling it through a predetermined amount of positons 'steps' in 'open loop', about 4/5 I think. Sometimes if removed when power on, it is possible that the stepper and the ECU can be out of synch. Not sure of the routines for checking these but they do exist for both of the above.

That said, the chance is that there is an air leak somewhere though and the ECU/stepper/lambdas are fighting each other in the battle for the correct tickover.

The Carbon cannister is in the Front wing in the engine bay behind an access panel..LHS as you sit at the drivers seat IIRC.

if the carbon cannister is in the l/h side as you sit in the car then what is the black cannister thing that sits just behind the headlamp on the drivers side, and my car dont have any access panels in the wheel arches.

Its the CARBON CANISTER for all "early" Chimaeras (RH side next to washer bottle) - LH side is Alarm Siren and air filter housing.
