I am restoring an old classic with a ford 1600 crossflow engine fitted. It is not the mexico block but the type fitted to mk 2 cortina 1600 GT etc. I haven't stripped the engine down yet so haven't got a clue what pistons or cam it is fitted with. I'm guessing it may have been tuned because there are a pair of side draught webbers slapped on the side. I am looking to tune the car for moderate fast road use and wondered if anyone had a good reciepy (type of pistons, cam, valve sizes etc) I should aim for to get a car that will behave at low revs, have reasonable torque and some punch for overtaking. Is about 120 bhp achievable with this engine, or am I dreaming?

120 bhp is quite achievable and not far from possibly where you are. The Gt had a slightly different piston design, which I believe up the C.R for the engine. The head as standard was slightly larger inlet valves and thats it. I would be eager to get it to bits and see whats in there. You won't need the later 711m block for 120 bhp, the block and the main bearings will be fine. Using a ported head and a kent 234 cam would be a nice job to match the webers and be quite nice to drive too.

You say it's not the Mexico block, but IIRC the mk1 Escort Mexico ran a 1600 xflow and the mk2 was a Pinto.
