Focus RS or not?

With the latest Focus RS having stopped production, a couple of dealers in Luxembourg, where I live, have a few left in stock.

I was thinking of p/ex'ing my wife's car and getting one as a 2nd car, which she'd use, keeping the km down, and probably keeping it standard, seeing as how the few 2nd hand RS that are for sale locally haven't really dropped much in price at all from new.

The 2 I've been offered are in Performance Blue.
1 has limited options, i.e. Bluetooth & USB, the other, which is €3K more, has all the options: Leather, nav + rear view camera, BT & USB, front & rear parking sensors.

I know options aren't worth much on resale, but do you think the fully kitted car would be easier to sell in a few years?


(I already know I will have to buy some 'alloygators' to protect the RS 19" rims!)

Looking at values over here I would guess to see it as an investment you need to leave it unregistered and covered for 15-20 years to see a rise.

I may be wrong though.

The previous generation seems to have held its value quite well so it's probably not an unsensible place to put your money- I doubt it'll appreciate though.

I'm not looking at it for an investment/appreciating value and fully expect depreciation, just not depreciation on the scale usually seen - if the 2nd hand ads are anything to go by ....

The MK1 sold out before they had time to hit the forecourts..

Apparently at the end of 2009 there were still 1966 registered in the uk from the 2147 originally sold.. many of the owners are RS enthusiasts.. and prices are bouyed by the limited numbers and RS enthusiasts..

I think the prices of the MK2 will eventually stabalise at around 17k in the next 12- 18 months.. based on the fact that there are so many more available..

For me, i would never upgrade to the MK2 without the leather seats.. as they are so much nicer than the cloth seats.. so it should be a lot easier to sell..

Drive one.

Having had the original RS a few years back, with a BMW 330cd inbetween, i had no convincing.. however my sensible side wasnt so easy. (coming from a fast diesel)

After a brief spin in a white one, I was fortunate to find a year old one with 700 miles on with everything in Ultimate Green from a ford enthusiast. Managed to blag it for the weekend, and picked it up last wednesday.

I would pay the extra to get the options, it makes it a more complete everyday package, especially as a day to day car. The half leather/alcantara recaros are better than that of the cloth clad ones.

Right spec will make it more desirable in a few years time.

I can get 27-30MPG on the motorway, sitting at 70-80. Round town, 23-25MPG.

Single best car i have owned, makes me smile walking towards it, when im sat behind the wheel. Although the colour might have something to do with it.

I had no idea they had stopped making them - it wasnt a limited production run was it?

Why would anyone need a oil burner if you can get 30 mpg at 80 ?

Even 22 mpg is decent for 2l petrol in town

Ford stopped the mk2 RS because they are bringing out a new model for 2011 with daytime running lights to coincide with the rest of the ford range

I was goign to surprise my wife with the "here's a new car for you", as I have done before, but having I bottled it last night I let her on on 'the secret'. She's going to test drive a green one tomorrow and see if she likes it. I'm sure she will.

Pretty certain I'll go for the higher specced one, despite the price difference.

Production run was always intended to be of that duration, with projected volume of around 8000 (in reality it ended up closer to 11000 according to a press release).

I 've heard nothing regarding the aforementioned 2011 version with DRLs, the mk3 ST unveiled recently will land first at the tail end of next year/beginning of 2012.

Oh yes, and get one, you won't regret it. Mine has the Mountune upgrade and is a belter. Economy isn't bad at all, I see 30mpg+ on a motorway cruise. Cant' complain about that when you've got 460Nm on tap.

My wife test drove the RS yesterday and really liked it.
The car she drove belongs to one of the dealer mechanics, who went with her on the drive.
Once the engine was warmed up he told her to give the car some real welly and my wife really enjoyed driving the car.

By her own admission, it wouldn't have been a car she would choose, but now she's driven one, and there's plenty of room in the back for our 2 daughters, it looks like all systems "go"!

General consensus amongst Ford RS peeps is that they will depreciate a lot as they have made too many [12,000] to make it exclusive
