Just about to buy a thicknesser for some joinery I'm doing...anyone reccomend a good table top jobbie?

Looking at the Makita 2012NB...anyone used this or got views compared to the cheaper 200quid Axminster/Ryobi type ones...

I've got one of these http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-ct3... on a supplied legstand hooked up to a chip extractor. It's done the job admirably for 5 years.

It has really gone up in price since I bought it though.

I have a Mcallister from Band Q. I only use if for small jobs ( furniture and boxes) in hardwood but it works well. It takes a bit of fiddling to get precise thicknesses but for £150 it's very good value.

Thanks chaps.

I thought the axminster has gone up from a few years ago when I contemplated it...looks like a badged makita or dewalt...

Really want to be able to get a good finish. Hate having toosl that make the job almost right but not perfect. Defeats the object of having them I think.

Will get a makita and the wife can buy food next month...

I think there is a lot to be said for getting a finish off the blade, but don't tell David Charlesworth or he'll have you tuning brand new Lie Neilsen planes for 6 weeks to get it spot on!

That Makita seems to be quite low price for their brand. Axminster products really seem to have increased in price - especially their "white" goods. I bought a panel saw 3 years ago, and it has gone up over 30% in that time. I am sure I paid less than £300 for the thicknesser including the legstand assembly which is now well over £400. And it still has a bloody noisy brush motor inside it.

APTC used to do a "Perform" range for hobbyists - which is me. I have a Perform 6" table top planer, morticer, band saw and lathe as they are not in much use, and seem to be ok for time-to-time usage. Wouldn't want to use them 8 hours a day 5 days a week though. They tend to be Chinese copies of other models built to a price (motors / bearings etc).

Have you looked at JET products? They have a good reputation although I cannot personally vouch for them.

I've never regretted anything from Axminster but didn't think their thicknesser was high enough quality a few years ago, so I bought a 2nd hand Scheppach. All the German brands are good IMO, Dewalt and JET also have good reputations.

I had a quick look on eBay and there's Makita and Rexon table-tops going for a couple of hundred pounds, both brands I trust. Personally I'd stay clear of Ryobi and Silverline, but I've no evidence they're not up to the job.

I've got a Dewalt "portable" one which has been fine for most things.

Cheers,

I've got a planer / thicknesser which is similar to this one.

It's sitting doing not a lot at the moment. In fact nothing it's in the lockup.

Are you buying it just for one project ?

Wanna borrow it ?
