How to do scratch and chip repairs

This is what I've been doing on my M3 this weekend after previous practice on my wife's Puma.
I started off with a couple of light scratches which were very easy and have then moved on to chips.
I'm using 1500 grit paper as I couldn't find 2000 grit anywhere and am therefore sanding as lightly as I can which does take longer but makes it much easier to polish out in the final stage.
I used a light cutting pad with a Porter Cable and some Scratch X which seemed to work very well.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Its high risk & if you go through the clearcoat on a metallic then it may result in having to have the whole panel resprayed - a good reason for not trying it on a bonnet!
You'll get 2000 from a motor factors(it'll be a pack of, they won't sell you sheets singly), check yellow pages & ring first as not all do body repair stuff. Or ebay.
