I have the Chim up on a ramp now and have done a full inspection. I think the chassis is in save-able condition, without the need for a body lift, partial or otherwise. The wishbones however are far rustier that I expected. Is replacing them an expensive operation or should I get them cleaned off and re-coated? What is everyones experience? Photos as follows, wishbone photos later..

I found that when I cleaned up my 1998 front wishbones that a couple of them had rusted thru so binned them and got some new ones. better safe than sorry for the cost.

I agree. Could be new outrigger time. That diagonal looks like you could put your finger through it i'm sorry to say

Has resisted the screwdriver test and yes, you are right, from the photos it looks bad, but it is actually very solid. Needs doing now though without delay.

The outrigger looks very like mine did, just before i had it done. Once it was removed and the 'back' of the tubes excavated, the holes were pretty terrifying. ...

Look at the upper inside corner of the upper wishbone and the cross arm of the lower one. That's where mine went, and I'm told they are the most common places.

sorry to be yet another one to say it, but those outriggers look shot. When they look that bad where you can see them the tops are probably like swiss cheese. again apologies but tryin to be constructive. I did a full body off last year so have an idea what im looking at. hope im wrong but i would give them a thorough inspection, including the screwdriver bit.

I would take contact with SC power, they have wishbones on offer at the moment. Looks like your ones are for the scrap bin, certainly would not like to drive with those fitted. Looks like out riggers have no strength left and must be replaced. Best place is Sportmotive. My Chim was stationary and was hit by another car last year and the front wheels collapsed into the out riggers breaking the wheels. Out riggers stood up to the impact and prevented the wheel from being pushed inside the car. Not sure sure yours would stand up to that test. Best change the parts.

It looks like new outriggers and wishbones, if the outriggers look like this then the bits you can't see like the top of the outriggers running from front to back will be BAD. Sorry but it looks like you may be looking at £1500 to £2000......ouch

My chasis looked like yours, I took the body off, did a bit of digging and ended up with.

Now I have had a better look and got one wishbone off:

Also given the rest of the chassis a critical look and not happy with what I have found:

All the weld joints on the main square runs have cracked and open powder coating.

Some more:

Chassis was fine when we bought it but we have never held back on using it in all weathers! Tractors just don't have the turn of speed we crave (hence the Cerbera S6 in the garage next to the Chim)biggrin

I think we will now have to go for the full body off 'restoration'. I'd hate to do the outriggers and wishbones only to have to lay the car up again in a few years and do other chassis work. I'm sure I'll post more pictures of fresh horrors!

Slightly O/T I Like the look of the ramps you are using.

Got it from these people in the USA: http://www.kwiklift.com/
It was quite pricey by the time I had paid import duty etc. but it disassembles and is easy to store. I am going to get a proper 2 post lift this winter so it may well come up for sale.. watch this space!
A few more pics:

Hoping to be ready for the body lift tomorrow!!

It is a really handy lift but, as above, I really want a 2 post lift! $1600 US plus import duty carriage etc. Not the cheapest!

From memory I beleive there is a tiny grub screw in the base area of the ball. (or is that the gear knob I am thinking of)

My bodies raised, centre console removed but the door knob is still in the car attached to the cables to operate the doors. I think the centre console gaiter will slip over it IIRC

Yep - there is a little grub screw at the front, you'll feel it if you run your finger down. Can't remember the size though (2/3mm?)
