Never had this before, today I called my insurance company because I've slapped a private plate on one of my cars. I called to ensure that all the paperwork was kept up to date. Anyhow, the (Indian call centre) chap said that because the car now has a private plate there will be an additional £90 premium. I've had a few private plates but have never been charged more for insurance. As such, I said I'd like to talk to the chap who sold me the policy in the first place and I'm currently awaiting his call. Anyone else had such an experience and if so did the insurer back down?

Depends on the plate. If its a pricey one, and the car is written off, the plate will belong to the ins co. Never heard of that with chap plates.

Is it an admin charge?

I didn't experience an insurance hike, but I did get slapped with a £40 'admin fee' for them to push a few buttons.

Maybe statistically people with private plates are higher risk ?

Certainly round our way if you have a private plate, for some it is carte blanche to drive like dick, which is counterintuitive as it makes your car more recognisable.

Never heard of this, who is the insurer?

Sure he hasn't confused an admin fee for altering the policy?

Not quite correct. Title doesn't pass until you have accepted the insurance company's offer of settlement. Should you wish to retain the VRM all that is needed is a letter from the insurer saying they have no interest in it which you then present to DVLA with all the other documentation. Simply put it on retention before accepting their offer and sending them the new V5C. Have had to go down this road twice in the last 15 years. Getting the letter has not been an issue.

Nor have I ever been asked to pay extra for having a personal plate. Some companies will levy an admin charge for every change to the policy/certificate etc, but £90 is taking the censored. Anything more than £25 max is extortion, pure and simple.
