Revs slow to drop

Just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on what could cause the engine to hold onto it's revs when changing up a gear and take an age to return to idle if I blip the throttle in neutral? The only thing I can think of is an air leak, but wouldn't know where to start looking.

The MIL light hasn't lit/beeped if that makes any difference.

Take the panel under the windscreen off, you can see the whole throttle linkage assembly then and try it for problems by hand. It may also be a frayed cable as mentioned.

Foam from the round the airbox coming loose and getting wedged under the throttle butterfly... ?

ETA - Seriously, much more likely to be throttle return springs. Check them and don't take any chances as you can buzz the engine to death if they both snap. I run an extra return spring on the passenger side throttle (4.2) just to be sure.

So if the throttle return spring snaps, the engine will shoot upto the redline? Better get checking.

Mine did this - was down to throttle body issues and then needed to spend some time (I mean money) stripping down and refitting. Mine could be resolved (as done by previous owner) by fitting bigger throttle return spring (two in fact) but this made throttle too stiff.

Throttles could also be out of balance (one bank slightly open with throttle at rest) so that's something else to check.

Your luck may have just taken a turn for the better.

I had the exact same symptoms and all it needed was a new throttle cable. If you take the scuttle panel off and tweak the cable around there it'll probably all feel fine. The friction will be somewhere lower down in the depths of the engine bay though where the cable comes through the bulkhead from the pedal. Hopefully a cheap fix for you. And when it is fixed you'll be so happy that you'll feel an uncontrollable urge to continually blip the throttle for absolutely no good reason.

spent sometime playing with the springs on mine as the cable seemed fine. How wrong i was after spending a few to many drives over revving, the cable was changed and now all sorted.

Have a spare cable in the boot, so might have a crack at changing it if it ever stops raining. Will try and source a couple of springs and change those, too.

Turns out it was the spring. Nice chaps at Taylor TVR noticed the problem too, whilst the car was in there being put back together after the entire fuel rail detached itself at speed on the A21.....
