Im finally in a position to be able to afford both insurance and car so figured a 106 GTI would be a good place to start in terms of interesting motoring.

Is there anything I should watch out for or expect to have to pay out big time when pursuing this?

Apart from the ragged to sh!t chav boy racer boxes of course

Bodged mods obviously,

Rear beam bushings, knackered suspension, knacked rear calipers where the brake pads fall out of, check they are not tie wrapped in,

Early cars had ste head gaskets, look for weeping oil coming out the front of the block near the alternator,

Crash damage, they are like crisp packets,

Smooth idle, no stepper motor / map sensor probs,

Dodgy cam covers, they dont have gaskets and people don't seal them properly as they are impatient so they leak, check coil pack for water ingress etc 1 coil pack does all 4 cyls iirc so pricey to sort,

As a bonus if you can I would take a code reader, mine used to flag up a few things but the light would go out on the dash board with the fault still present,

Check the alarm if it is standard the shock sensors in the cabin get pissed off by hot weather, check you can isolate these if required with the button near the ignition (iirc)

Gearbox mounts can shear off under hard use, check with mate in car lifting clutch in 1st with handbrake on, you watch the engine move,

Gear selection will be st unless short shifter installed, see gmc motorsports for sensible mods,

Other than that, usual checks apply,

Ace car, I had one almost new, diablo red, non leather interior with no sunroof.

Check your feet aren't any bigger than size 9 as they won't fit on the pedals.

I used to manage with size 11s, its the offset rather than the spacing.

Size 11/12 here. A pain for a mile or so but you quickly get used to it

It will have been ragged to death, I mean if your going to drive it like a girl then why bother getting one?

It needs to be maintained appropriately thats the key thing.

Not totally. The diff bearings in the gearbox can go if you spin the wheels or keep your foot in for that large uphill part of the Nurburgring (biggrin) and a lowered beam really screwes beam bushes up.

Biggest issues I had with my Saxo revolved round the 2001/later ECU, it failed on mine which was bloody annoying and any sensor issues were a pain to sort.

I'd probably go with a earlier late 2000 model year one and avoid the later ECU

Sorry buddy, i know you said anything to watch out for but i would buy Japanese for that budget.

Could get some nice things that shouldnt breakdown or feel like they are made of paper.

I had one a few years old... I sold it as an MOT failure after 11 months.

Was a great laugh while i had it. But the rear beam was knackered the the ABS light kept coming on both common problems. It was sold as an MOT failure as it was not worth fixing it.

Known a few like this.

Peddals super close together and felt like it was made of paper...... was pretty quick though.

I would urge you to try a few other cars to see what you think, and if you still really want the 106, then go in expecting that you will probably have to fix something fairly soon. Sorry, it was even more unreliable than BOTH my 205's.

ill make sure to look for one with a decent service history so i at least know what im getting into

Get a rallye instead - more chance of finding one owned by an enthusiast rather than said boy racer who can't afford to run one. That said, it's a Pug. The dealers are dreadful as is their build quality - buy with caution and have a budget set aside for repairs.

I really shouldn't want one of them, and yet the proportions are just right for a quick hatchback.

I just wouldn't dare own something French as my only car.

I've got really good memories overall of my old Gti :

That said the gearbox had to be replaced as it started to grind itself to pieces and a load of sensors went once making it piss pure petrol out the exhaust...

I'd still have another one now if i could find a minter. Brilliant little engine.

it should actually be quite easy to find an unmolested one as the barryboys seem to prefer the saxo vts to the 106 gti.

Check the cam belt AND tensioner have been done.

Physically check the coilpack (mine disintegrated), check for oil leaks as above.

Check the clutch and exhaust.

Great cars.
