Hi all,

For next year looking to fit a T5 'box into the racer. The bellhousing I've got for the engine (Ford 'BOA' 24v V6 Cossy) has the gearbox bolt pattern for I think the Type9 (6 bolt fixing) and none match up to a T5.

Can you get a bellhousing ready to fit? What am I looking for? Or is it a case of getting one fabricated up?

Thanks

Dave

AFAIK, they never did a manual road car with the 24v engine, so you may have to get one made, or converted.
Not sure though if any of the S car had a 24v engine fitted, as maybe better asking on the S forum.

Hi , My brother has a 24v BOB engine in his taimar with a Tremec T5 box , the bellhousing does not look specially made , can get some details later this week when I see him , we lifted the body off his car last weekend to give it a going over so easy access to gearbox etc. Have You got a picture of your bellhousing showing the bolt pattern for comparison ?

I am fitting a 24v BOB into my taimar as well but was going to go down the ford MT75 gearbox route , but may reconsider if a T5 comes along on ebay......

Cheers
Geoff

Thanks Geoff - is the Tremec the same basic box as teh Ford (Borg Warner) T5? I can get a photo of the bellhousing bolt pattern - but for ease the only different between the blocks that I know of is the top 2 bolts. On ours, they are narrow (about 4" apart) and the wider top is about 7-8" apart at a guess - it is obvious though!

It's going to be a winter project so will have time to get sorted if I need to get one made up.

cheers

Dave

They look pretty similar , tried to upload pictures but failed ?

Have a look at the Burton power website at their bellhousings to get an idea of what you need. Very expensive alloy ones on there but could give you an idea of what to look for on ebay.... I got a ( described as broadspeed manufactured ) alloy one off there for £20 ! ( unused.)

Will measure bolt holes on tremec box later this week.

Cheers
Geoff.

you can use the std cast iron manual bellhousing off say a 2.8 granada, but you need an extender to mate the (shorter) t5 input shaft to the crank spigot, plus you need an adaptor plate to bolt the t5 to the iron bellhousing. it's all a bit of a bodge but does work! if you're good with a tape measure and vernier calipers you can do it all yourself. however with all the faffing about you might be better trying to find a firm that does a bellhousing to suit off the shelf, or use the 4litre V6 mustang bellhousing from the states which is said to fit over on passionford forums.

You might want to check ou the Sierra / Sapphire RWD Cosworths. They had a BW T5 mated to a Pinto block which I'm pretty sure has the same bellhousing bolt patern as the BOA. Try the caprisport website or CapriPower It's all been done before on there.

A bit of recent info from the S forum.
BoostedLS1 also has a lot of knowledge - and sells a few bits e.g. exhaust manifolds.

Some useful info on the whole Cologne V6 family of engines here, may give some idea of what vehicles you could be looking at for a compatible bellhousing, etc.

Always thought (99.9%) the 24V engine has the same bolt pattern as the 12V engines, if this is the case you need a small mortgage and go to the Burton Power web site, click transmission / bellhousings / cologne.

At £464.99 is not cheap, but it's a proper solution.

I definately recommend buying a proper bell housing. They're out there. I wouldn't bother with nasty flat metal adaptor plates unless you want grief later on.

Thanks for the info guys! Boosted - any ideas where else you can get bellhousings from? Or is £465 what I'll have to pay?

Also - how do you modify/extend the input shaft? Can it be done without taking the box apart?

Hi CTSDAVE,

I finally remembered to have a look at which bellhousing is used on my brothers tvr taimar to mate the 24v bob engine to the T5 gearbox. It is the original one from the engine/autobox configuration which has been modified for the T5 box by someone when the engine was fitted. It has a thick ali piece welded on to the bottom edge of it too accomodate the lower gearbox bolt holes and hydraulic clutch operation. As someone said earlier , if you have the skill it can be done. Not sure how the input shaft has been lengthed thou. I now have the two MT75 gearboxes required to make up the hybrid box for my project , just need to find a local place to have it made up. So I will have the bellhousing from my autobox going spare if any use to anyone to have it converted.

Cheers
Geoff
