Does the brake light on the dashboard light up when the handbrake is on or is it only when the fluid is low in the resevoir?

Yes, both. Mine started to illuminate all the time so checked fluid level and level switch which were OK so it was the brake lever switch. Rattling the brake lever around would get it to go off for a bit but then it would come back on. Groping around the lever gaiter I could feel the limit switch probe and turn off just pressing it down.......so what should be doing that? turns out that there is a little "L" shaped bracket attached to the lever that should activate the switch but it had bent out of the way. Just bent it back and all OK, this was all done just feeling around with the gaiter in place which avoided the terror of having to fiddle around with the tunnel etc. One of those odd niggles that it was so nice to fix without grief in the end. Hope this might help somebody sometime.

Well, seems as though I don't have a wire to the handbrake switch, had the vent cover plates off under the car and it is non existent, quite easy to fix though.
