advice on transmission oil needed

My griff 430 (modell/93 - ROVER BOX) needs to have new transmission oil. I had a look in the owners handbook which stated - ATF220. In Steve Heath "Bible" this oil is just for the T5 Box. The Rover Box should be filled up with SS80 or Castrol TQR or Catrol SMX but not with ATF 220. Now I am confused. Can anybody help me out? What is the right and best oil for the Rover Box?

From what Steve says in the Bible I believe Castrol SMX is the TVR recommended Oil for the Rover Box. Is EP80 the Castrol SMX Oil as I must admit it becomes a bit confusing unless you know your oils in the next sentance after recommending the Castrol??

I was using the ATF 220 oil in my 92 car until last service and changed to Castrol Automatic TQ Dextron 111, slightly better gear change I find.

After contacting Castrol in Germany (our neighbours..) They gave me the advise to use Castrol SMX-S fully synthetic gear oil. This combined with an additive called TSL made my gearbox change gears like never before.

Not sure about the Rover box but I’ve been advised that ATF 220 can be replaced with Dextron 3 a modern high spec oil, which is available from Halfords.

I used Castrol SMX-S fully synthetic oil in mine. 1994 500 pre-serp with rover gearbox.

Seem fine and give better cold performance than the old stuff. Make sure you drain the old stuff out first though just incase it's not synthetic. You will need at least 2 ltrs and possibly a 3rd litre.
