Race Boots?

How many of you wear race boots on track days and what would you recommend?

I currently drive in my normal trainers but I'd like to get some proper footwear for the job. Having never bought any before I'm not 100% sure how far I need to go.

Also if anyone's got experience of the Piloti range I'd be interested to know how they compare too.

I use Puma drift cats. They are ideal for trackdays as they are still hard wearing (and comfy) enough to be able to wander around or walk on wet ground. 'Proper' race boots would be trashed in no time by walking around and they are not waterproof at all.

I tried the pumas but found them way too narrow. Opted for some Alpinestar karting boots as a compromise. Not fireproof but very comfortable and really do help with H&T. Much better feel than trainers.

Does anyone know anywhere in the north west that stock this kind of thing? Somewhere where you can actually go and try them on and see what they actually look like?

I wear old karting boots on track days. It looks a little pretentious perhaps, but I can't get my (averagely sized) feet in the Caterham's pedal box in trainers!

To be fair, I also wear them driving it on the road for the same reason.

I got a couple of pairs of Lonsdale trainers from TK Maxx - like boxing boots but just trainer height, so ultra thin soles but sufficiently resilient to wander about in. <£20 a pair.

They often have the thin-soled Pumas in too.

Hi Seb,

I use the Alpine stars Tech1, but I also have used the Piloti Ingels le mans for karting and they would make a fine track day boot.
Racing boots will give you more feel from the pedals than most trainers.
Gloves are also a good thing to have.

I've got a pair of Piloti's which I like a lot, and wear off track. They look like a pair of trainers, but next time I might be tempted by their leather ones.

Oh I don't think they do at all. There have been several threads about what to wear on track days and I think wearing the right things on your feet is the minimum. I wear karting boots and they are just dandy.

Those who would critisise someone for wearing race boots is probably someone you don't want to share track space with. Sweeping generalisation I know, but you get my point.

Adidas Feroza race boots were the only thing in my size that I could get at the time. Excellent, but very much at the ouch end of the price spectrum...

I've also been looking at Piloti Prototipo's which are similarly priced to kart boots. Obviously they are more trainers than race boots, but are they any less functional?

I prefer the boot style, but then I'm in a Radical and sitting pretty flat and the extra support helps, now I'm really old!

I've recently bought some Piloti boots (from GrandPrix Legends - very good service & price) and love them. Only thing to bear in mind is you'll need a size bigger than normal. I take a 9 1/2 or 10 but needed Piloti size 11.
