I've been working for a big telecommunications company for 15 years. I've slowly climbed the ranks and am now middle management.

But looking upwards there is still a long way to go before reaching where i want to be.
The rate of progression in my career has slowed dramatically over the last few years. I can only attribute this to either the economy or the fact that no new graduates are being taken on into the company (this could be related to the economy point).

I am starting to think that my career has stalled, but i have become quite specialised in what i do and skills are possibly not transferable.

For those of you that have become successful within business, how did you do it? Do you keep plodding along? Do you take risks?

I am quite keen to open a MOT testing station and managing it, however, i have dependants and a mortgage. This risk seems massive - what do i do?
