Best affordable performance diesel?
Discussion
OK guys, budget is up to £15k, and the car has to be an auto and still put a smile on my face.
Current car is a BMW 130i M-Sport. Which would you go for and why? - and are there any others I should be considering?
1. e46 BMW 330CD
2. E90 BMW 330d
3. BMW 123d Auto
4. Skoda VRS 2.0 TDI DSG
5. Seat Leon FR 2.0 TDI DSG

I think you can get 335d s for that money now, but watch this before deciding on turning to the dark side or not

Quite a few of those will be getting similar MPG to the current car so what is your reason for wanting a performance diesel?
The power delivery in some of those is different enough that im not sure if thats your reason for wanting one?
Fun fact my ex gfs mums e60 525d auto got worse mpg than my petrol 525 manual.
C70 d5 is also interesting though a diesel engine volvo convertable is a bit wrong. Some of the other d5 volvos are good too.

Please note: In the examples shown above, the diesel is older, yet more expensive, than the petrol. Factor this into your decision before you buy (applies to any car),because if you do low to average miles per annum, it will take several years before the diesel becomes cost effective. Good luck

Annual mileage has gone up from 9000 to circa 15000 miles per year, my journey now to work is 75% motorway, and I was hoping that by switching to a diesel auto, I'd give my left leg a rest in traffic jams + increase my intervals between fill ups from 250 miles to approx 500 miles. Economy at the moment is 28.5 mpg in the 130i - I should be looking at at least 38mpg with these cars right? The power delivery in some of those is different enough that im not sure if thats your reason for wanting one?

I only get 38mph from my 320d Auto, I reckon a 330d will struggle to top 32-33.
Plus, going from a BMW I6 to a BMW diesel will utterly destroy your soul. Check my garage out to show you how I know.
Sounds like it's stuck in 2nd, I'd get that looked at, you must be holding up the middle lane more than most...Plus, going from a BMW I6 to a BMW diesel will utterly destroy your soul. Check my garage out to show you how I know.

Get mid to late 40s from my 320d auto e46, and the engine matches the auto box well. Had an e90 320d M Sport as a courtesy car for a few weeks not long ago which went very well, but the suspension was a bit stiff for day to day driving, but perfect for an enthusiastic drive on the b roads.Plus, going from a BMW I6 to a BMW diesel will utterly destroy your soul. The 6 cylinder BMW diesels go very nicely.
I think my first port of call would be to drive my current car more economically and see what difference that makes. If you can't drive your current car economically then why would you be able to get the best out of a diesel? Then I would take a long hard look at the numbers and work out exactly how much I can save on fuel and road tax by going diesel. It's probably worth the switch if your car is coming up for renewal anyway, but if you're going to replace a recently purchased car and then drive it without thinking 'economy' all the time then you're probably wasting your time. Diesel engines save less fuel than a light right foot.

Purchased the 130i in March 2006. Thinking of changing just because I fancy something new. The 130i is a fantastic car - it's a real struggle to know what to replace it with as it's such a good all rounder. As for driving economically - if I drove like a complete granny maybe I could squeeze another 1 mpg out of average economy. There's little point in having a 130i though if you're not going to give it the beans now and again....330d manual. beautiful power delivery, revs up to 5k (nearly!). 39 mpg (manual, A and spirited B roads).
I just put new Koni FSD shocks on my E91 330d SE at 60k miles and the ride is TRANSFORMED (with non runflats of course!). Nimble and supple. A joy...
It was crashy and unbearable before.

That was brilliant; good find. I don't think a 335d qualifies as frugal although fairly quick so probably best to stick to a 2 litre version with slush box to satisfy your requirements.

I have a 130i and understand what you are saying - when you are just say on the motorway, it's hard to justify the30mpg for those few fleeting moments of sound and power.
I would say maybe sonething other than a 1 series, as we have been spoilt by the pick of that model and anything else would be a compromise. I'd maybe try a 123d just to see though...
I recently drove a scirocco 170tdi and was impressed with it's punch. As they are out of budget, perhaps an Octavia bed with te same engine? Again out of budget, but could do well on depreciation, so may even out, is an early alpina d3
Let us know what you go for - I need some similar inspiration when mine goes soon
