Guys (n gals)
planning a trip that will take in West Yorks. Will be staying at Whitby, travelling up from Skegness and then travelling back down to Holmfirth in the Peaks. Would be grateful for any tips/advice of roads to drive or avoid, as well as any landmarks/places of interest that we ought to detour for.
So any suggestions for the final part of the 1st leg to Whitby, or the leg between Whitby and Holmfirth would be much appreciated.
I'm sure there are some belting roads, and therefore it'd be a shame to miss them after just picking a route at random using Google Maps!!!!

many thx
Mark

I assume you'll be travelling over the Humber Bridge, so from there, I would go:
A164 through Beverley to Driffield
B1248 to Staxton
A64 to Scarborough
A171 to Whitby

If you want a scenic route from Whitby to Holmfirth, try this:
A169 to Pickering
A170 to Thirsk
A61 to Ripon
B6265 to Skipton
A629 to Huddersfield
A616 to Holmfirth

This route takes you through some great scenery and on some great roads.

Try to avoid the M62 around Leeds and Huddersfield as it is very congested, especially around rush hour and there were roadworks on there last time I used it.

The A164 and B1248 should not be too busy, but the A64 and A171 will be. The good news is that as the A171 heads over the moors, overtaking is not difficult.

From Whitby to Holmfirth, the A169 may be reasonably busy but visibility is so good that overtaking is never a problem. The quietest road will be the B6265 and the busiest will probably be the A629, but there are no quiet roads in that part of the world.

In that case you'll be needing the B6024 and the B6105 Devil's elbow to Glossop smile

If you have the time do the 6024 in both directions thumbup

The B1248 is regarded by many as one of the countries greatest roads. Take the A164 to the A1079. At the roundabout 3rd exit dir Malton. Left at next roundabout you're on the B1248. Follow signs for Malton, Pickering, Whitby. Before Malton the fish and chips at Wetwang are famous and seriously good. The route from Pickering to Whitby A170 crosses the North Yorkshire Moors. It's a seriously fantastic road in either direction. Hole of Hocum offers a brief stop and breathtaking view. Gothland (Adensfield in Heartbeat), Grosmont, Egton Bridge, all on the NYM steam railway and nice. Beckhole is just off the beaten track, and has a nice pub for a swift Old Peculiar. Once you've done Whitby you get to come back this way A170 so plan ahead if sightseeing is important. On the return leg to Pickering, keep going to Helmsley. If you want one of the best pub / restaurants in the country it's the Star Inn at Harome, just before Helmsley. From Helmsley dir Thirsk via Sutton Bank, still A170. Leaving Helmsley on the A170 you could divert taking the B1257 very briefly then right to Ampleforth, Wass, Byland Abbey, Oldstead and then Kilburn. At Kilburn the Mouseman of Kilburn oak furniture is carved here. The gift shop and cake shop are really good, as is the furniture of course. Close by is the White Horse at Kilburn too. Look for the brown tourist signs for directions to the car park. It's not a medieval white horse, but still good even if Victorian. The walk to the top is steep, rewarding and fantastic views. After Sutton Bank, which you will miss coming down if you do the divert to Kilburn, no big deal, you will cross the A1 hit Thirsk. I'm all out from here.

Google Map the above and Google the places I mention if they might be your thing. Enjoy. And one last thing. If you do it late in the night there's not much petrol from Beverley to Thirsk after something like 10pm. I think I'm right in saying there's no 24hr anywhere along this route. I've not done it recently and I wish I had. Use to live up that way a few years ago.

If you coming over to Holmfirth try and fit in Emley Moor Mast on your way through worth a look.

The two best road on the NY Moors are the 1257 north out of Helmsley, and the Blakey Ridge road - the road evo use for a lot of their road tests - which runs north out of Hutten-le-hole. These form my Sunday morning runs out.

The A170 is a boring drive usually full of traffic. Ok to get to whitby on, but personally if you were coming from Malton, I'd go via Helmsley, and then east to Hutton-le-hole and then North up the blakey road until you hit the Guisborough - whitby road. The views are incredible and the road has lots and lots of sighted bends where you can have a play - just watch out over the blind crests though as there is a good chance of finding a sheep.

I think the 170 is nothing short of spectacular as a drivers dream road, Pickering - Whitby, no matter which direction. I agree the rest is not as great but it does have lots of good moments to be fair. The Pickering/Whitby 20 mile run is pretty awesome when there's no traffic on it. I suppose it depends how hard you can drive / ride it on any given day.

I'll check out the Hutton-le-Hole Blakey route. I think I'm missing out on something by the sounds of it. Next time I'm up that way then. Thanks.

The problem with the A170 is that it's the main coast road so unless you do it v-early or v.late you're constantly sat behind slower cars.

The blakey road is similar in terms of bends etc. but the views are spectacular and the road surface is a little more challenging.

If you haven't done the Helmsley - Stokesly TT though, that is one of the best.

http://www.streetfire.net/video/suzuki-gsxr-v-tl10... Start at 2mins as it drops into Bilsdale.

Ooooh so close. These are actually numbers two and three of the best three roads on the NY moors. Number one is almost a road to nowhere - the Cockayne loop. Turn left at the BATA garage in Helmsley as you head out of town and after the first half mile of mandatory 30mph the road goes through fantastic to sublime to epic. There are a couple of gates to navigate but there is almost no traffic ever on the road. Follow your nose for 20 miles and you end up at Kirkymoorside on the A170.

Would it be churlish of me to point out that said road is now no longer a loop and has been closed for a couple of years because of a landslip hehe

Agreed though it was fun - the only problem is the hedgerows and I used to do it in my westy. Some great hairpin uphill bits though.

I wouldn't discount the A170 between Pickering and Whitby. It's a rewarding stretch of road if your attack vehicle of choice is a large displacement TVR.
