looking for a cheap set of wheels for the winter tyres I bought rather than putting on the original rims.

Everything seems expensive. Anyone done this or got a link for cheap winter replacements. (E39)

Don't know of any steel wheels that would fit, as minimum is 17" and not even then can you be sure they would clear the front calipers.

Best bet is a set of 17" style 66 off ebay.de or some replica in 18" but be sure that the centre bore is 74.1 mm (all other BMWs use 72.5 mm)

Alternatively, if you could source a set of 18" M5 wheels, you could use the 4 front wheels (8" wide with 245/40/18 tyres) for the winter set and the 4 rear 9.5" for the summer set (with 275/35/18 tyres) with a 5 mm spacer for the front.

No guarantees about fitment, but maybe worth a punt:

Hard to get OEM wheels that'll fit, your best bet is Style 66 rims (standars E39 sport rims)or the like, regular E39 wheels won't fit.
Common winter setups on M5's seem to be 8" all round style 66 wheels with 235/45/17's or staggered 8" front 9" rear with 255's on the back.

I beleive there is one other type of BMW wheel you can use but can't remember what it is right now.
