it'd be the usual uproar of how XYZ is bad for you and should be banned etc etc.

However because it's simply some booze, nobody bats an eyelid.

Except that banning booze wouldn't stop people drinking, it would just make them unsure of the quality and strength of what they were drinking. Much like you can't be sure what's in the drugs you're smoking/snorting/injecting as there's no regulation of the producers.

I don't see a strong correlation between substance abuse and substance legality.

Wasn't he on drugs when he decided it would be a good idea to drink a pint of vodka though?

Do you mean that substance abuse vs substance use is not linked with legality?

Substance use is definitely linked to legality IMO. If you're the personality type that is likely to abuse substances, I'm not sure legality is a strong disincentive. Just my opinion.

I am not sure I agree on the first point with regard to usage and legality, using examples such as Portugal and Amsterdam and their drug usage over legalised drugs.

However I agree if an addict, then the legality line is irrelevant.

Well personally I think that front-page news on one of the world's premier news sites can quite easily be classed as 'batting an eyelid'. Plus have you not noticed the incessant calls to further regulate alcohol, restrict sales, increase prices and reduce consumption? Don't go giving them ideas about banning it as well...

Surely the reason no one bats and eyelid is that he was from Teeside...?

It's newsworthy there if you dont die in pool of at least one bodily fluid.

Amazing how people are ok with hearing about how their friends got 'bladdered' at the weekend, but if they were to be told they'd got off their heads on coke or some other such substance, it would be frowned upon. I realise one substance is legal the other isn't, but they're both mind altering drugs aren't they? How come one is ok the other isn't?

Social conditioning.

Edit: But also with alcohol you know what you're getting (unless it's homebrew hehe), something that can't be guaranteed with illegal drugs.

What I think I meant to ask was, how come one is legal, the other isn't? Make sense?

There's no easy answer to that as I'm sure you know. It is often said that if someone invented alcohol tomorrow (if it was previously unknown) it would be made illegal everywhere instantly. The same is sometimes said about coffee. Cultural traditions and our attitudes to the different stimulants and depressives available to us are bizarre, basically. There was a story on the news recently about Buckfast tonic wine and the fact that it is cited as a significant factor in large numbers of drunken assaults actioning harm in Scotland, but is highly unlikely to ever be controlled as it's made by lovely, peaceful monks...

In the articles I saw, it mentioned he was on mephedrone when he decided it would be a good idea to down a pint of vodka.

He may not of thought it was quite so clever otherwise!

There are a few resons, but mainly Paper Competition with Dupont.
