cracked manifold?
Discussion
Hi Richard
Thats bad luck as its NOT a nice job!
On my 84 I spent ages getting at the nuts and trying to do it with the engine in the car, I finally got it off tho!! It took days and heaps of modifying spanner, skinned knuckles, sore chest(from lying on top of cam covers) but it is possible, with only minor jacking of the engine on that side.
After having it welded I even loctited the studs back in and managed to get it back on. BUT as I did up the last nut it kept turning and BUMMER it was the stud turning in the alloy(Stripped)
So I had to take the engine out anyway to helicoil the head, turned out this was much easier and allowed me to change the cam belt and do other maintenance at the same time. I wish I had done it the first time round.
One word of caution, make sure whoever welds your manifold is the best in the business, if any bit of weld comes off internally say goodbye to your turbine wheel!
Best of luck
Kevin

Hello,
i've had the same problem on my '92 SE last year.I tried to make this job on my own.But it wasn't possible, cause i can't put one screw out.So i put the car to a good friend of mine. He's an ex race-mechanic.
He's done the whole job in 10 hours.
My good luck was that i find a brand new exhaust manifold at eBay for the half of the regular price.
The price of this part is about 1375 Euros here in Germany, without any gaskets and screws.
You don't have to put out the engine!!First you have to remove all heat shields to get more space. After you have reinstalled the manifold don't tighten all screws to much.20 Newtonmeters are enough.
One thing at last!
I wouldn't never try to weld the manifold. It's cast iron.No one here gives you any warranty for this job.
There are temperatures between 900-1100 degrees celsius during driving.
Thx
