Buying a car without the V5?

I have put a deposit down on a car that I intended to pick up on Saturday. However the car has a personal plate and the sale didn't include the plate so the owner has sent the paperwork off to the DVLA to transfer the plate to his other car and the car I've bought will most likely revert to its original plate.
Trouble is he's sent the V5 off which will come back to him with the car's original number.
Problem for me is if I pick it up Saturday the V5 will no doubt still be in a DVLA department being processed or something.
So my question is "should I pick up the car or wait until he gets the V5 back?"
I have no doubt the seller is the real owner. I actually looked over the V5 to check the car's details when I viewed it. I also looked through the car's history, MoTs and old tax discs which the owner has. I also saw that, as he told me, his name and address is shown as the keeper for the last 5 years. His name and address is also on many of the bills for work done on the car as well as the last few years' MoTs
I have visited his house twice, have his home phone number, full address and absolutely no doubt he is 100 percent genuine.
He has issued a receipt with all his contact details that agree with those I have. I paid the deposit to him in person at his house (where the car is registered). I have HPI'd the car and all is clear.
He said he would wait until the V5 is back if necessary though I'd rather pick it up on Saturday.
If I pick it up before the V5 is back he said he'll write a letter with the receipt that says he has sold the car to me and it is solely owned by me for full payment received, etc, etc, etc.
Sound OK to pick it up before the V5 arrives?

BTW what happened when you bought with the document? Did you just send off to DVLA for a registration document?

Seems like they don't do this anymore. I went to my local one a week ago to get a private plate taken off and the original reg put back on. Had to wait a week for the paperwork to come through and the V5 can take up to 4 weeks to come back.Blimey I've just googled the guy and found his professional CV on uk.Linkedin and it has his photo and he mentions one of his interests being his Corvette and mentions his son's Elise 190 which I have also seen.
Plus the PH ad for his car is even photographed on the drive of his house where I have been twice.
I have no doubts about the seller - I was just wondering if I could get any complications from the DVLA/

Did i imagine this or am i right - the V5 does not indicate legal ownership of the vehicle - just who is responsible for MOT, tax, insurance and motoring offences.

I don't think you've got anything to worry about. It would have been better (as mentioned earlier) to have done the change of keeper and the retention application for the private plate at the same time.
This used to be a pain as the retention document would come through in the new keepers name. The rules changed just over a year ago. It is now possible to carry out a change of keeper/retain a registration number and provide a separate name and address for the details you wish to show on the retention document (Grantee).
The seller is putting himself at risk because any parking/speeding offences will come through in his name until the change of keeper goes through. It doesn't sound like the two of you intend to stitch each other up so there shouldn't be any complications.
If you take the vehicle away on the private plate you must insure it on that registration number. Notify your motor insurer when the new plates/tax disc are displayed on the car.
When the seller gets the reprinted V5c through from Swansea showing the replacement registration number, complete the change of keeper section as normal inserting the correct date that you became the keeper. Remember to hold on to the green slip V5c/2 until the new V5c comes through from Swansea in your name and address.

No, it's a Corvette, possibly the only 1996 Collector edition LT4 6-speed manual in the country, hence my enthusiasm to pick it up!Malc
Is the car taxed and tested, because if it isn't taxed, then it will take around 5-8weeks before you are able to get the car on the road, much easier for the current owner to get a new V5, then transfer it into your name.
Obviously do the usual checks on the car, HPI etc, also if its an old Vette, chances are the guy will have posted on an owners forum, look at his posts! and I mean it, when I was buying a Skyline GTSt, trawled through the skyline owners clubs forums and on a few occasions found the sellers, was quite telling how they had maintained, and more importantly driven the car!
