My hack just lost all drive... could this be the end?
Discussion
Hi folks
I have an MY2000 TDi Octavia, which has just ticked over 150k miles, serving me so well for the last two years since I obtained it at 75k miles. I posted in the VAG section about an issue with a "steering vibration" which happens occasionally when the car has been running at motorway speeds for about 2 hours or so. The problem basically is a quite violent shake of the steering wheel, which is intermittant at best. 3 separate garages failed to see a problem in the drive/ suspension components.
Anyway, coming from Edinburgh to Leicester this evening, around about Morpeth the "shake" came back with a vengeance. It got so bad after 2-3 miles that I decided to switch the Sat Nav to the nearest hotel and try to find a garage tomorrow. As I rounded into the hotel car park, a rather strange clunk noise started when applying drive and turning at the same time, then cluck, all drive lost. The car now makes a rather nasty grinding sound when a gear is engaged and obviously won't move.
So, anyone care to take a stab at the problem? It had 2 new CV joints about 40k ago, whilst I know it is by no means recent, it's only about a year or so! So, outer CV joints, inner CV's, a drive shaft, or shock horrer the 'box?
Also, can I call the AA now and arrange a collection tomorrow morning, or will I have to wait until I wake up to call?
Thirdly, of course, is a what car
. 30k p.a. £3k budget, must be a very comfortable place (Octavia not good enough on that front) to be and Diesel.
