Painting patio sliding doors?

Do you reckon this can sucesfully be done? I had new windows about 12 years ago the windows are wooden which were wood stain finish and consequently the patio doors (two sets) are brown. Now I intend to paint the windows white inside and french white (pale grey) outside. I want to paint the patio doors to match, they are the ususal metal framed ones and reckon it's metal so it must paint but my wife says leave them brown because it will not look good painted. What's the opinion here? I would rub them lightly to key the paint and then undercoat and roll on the top coat having masked the glass. Thoughts?
