Removal of power steering rack
Discussion
What a major PITA this is!!
Can anyone tell me what size the heads are on the nuts holding the hydraulic pipes in are meant to be??
Both 5/8ths and 16mm have play and are rounding the brass head. Have soak them in Plus Gas but still showing now signs of moving. Looking like a pipe cutting job and mole grips when its out. Any tips appreciated.

You *can* get the rack out with the hard lines still in if you move the track arms and rotate it judiciously but it's bloody tight! Slide everything as far as it'll go into the O/S arch, rotate and lift it out through the gap vacated by the Y piece.
I can find the size of the spanner tomorrow if you're still stuck.

I bought a used rack and one of the lines was damaged - I guess from removing the rack. I've currently repaired it with a compression joint, but its weeping. Can you get those unions out of the rack easily?
They seemed pretty soft to me whem I tried to move them, and the nuts bloody tight.

You can use braided lines, I've seen it on a Cerb. Local hydraulic supplier should be able to help though.
I've done it four times at least and though it seems to be a faff you might as well take the Y out as it's quicker in the long run.
Have I mentioned Kiley Clinton and fitting an ATQ filter in the return line yet????

Always had mine out through the nearside arch, still a right PITA!I can find the size of the spanner tomorrow if you're still stuck.
Will be coming out for one more time and giving it to the Clinton guys.
Failing a fix, pass me the matches

Thanks man - didnt particularly want to take the Y piece off unless I have to. Have managed to bolloc*ks one of the hard pipes already! Pressumably any hydraulic pipe place can knock these up/
Hi Ian take the Y piece out its a ten minute job and you will need the room
I have some Flair spanners if you need them

The rack comes out easily with the Y piece removed but the solid pipes have to come off to remove the rack with the Y piece in place. I've done both. It's much easier to take the Y piece out. The rack can then be removed and replaced from above.
If you're sending the rack for a rebuild then some places do a better job than others! I had a bit of a nightmare with mine.

This is the third time I have taken a rack out of this car.
Disconnect column,
" all pipes including copper link pipes,
Release ARB, from drop links and mounting brackets,
Twist and pull, twist and wiggle and remove rack through nearside arch.
The above works for me, 2 1/2 hours of misery.
It is now lieing on the garage floor like a dead thing, when it has been repaired and replaced, I never want to see it again
Off to the Clinton boys on Monday, can't wait to see the back of it!
