1D Mk2 worthwhile upgrade from 450d?

I've enjoyed my 450d over the past few months but am thinking I could do with something a bit faster shooting motorsport (Le Mans, Rally GB etc).

Would a 1d Mk2 or Mk2N be a worthwhile upgrade? I'll have to upgrade my lenses from the EF-S stuff I've got, thinking about 24-105 and 70-200 F4 but hope that the combination will focus quicker and also think the weather sealing will be useful.

Any thoughts on swapping a nearly new consumer camera for an older pro model?

I've been looking at MK2s at around £6-700 used and about £400 for a 70-200, then a 24-105.

They are still good bodies, although they are only 8MP compared to new gear which is more, but you get 8FPS, and full time autofocus, which is want you want for motorsport. Shutters are rated for something like 200,000 shots.

Along with water resistance when used with L glass, as all EOS-1's do. Seen many prosumer bodies die when guys are using them in a downpoor, while weather sealed pro stuff shrugs it off.

Why not look at one of the xxD range, you'll get a decent mix of speed and newer features that way.

Plus you get to keep your EF-S lenses (if you want to).

Getting a 1dmk2 to replace a 450D ain't a good idea IMO. digital cams move on at a fast rate of knots, you're better off with a 50D [if you can find one] or a 7D

I was considering a similar move from 450d to 5d ii, with the 21MP full frame sensor.

But the additional cost would also buy me some great lenses so that's what I'm doing. Although the 5d ii does video too and will for sure be higher image quality, I've probably not exhausted the 450d yet - so some new lenses and a bit more practice is probably the best move.

Worthwhile? Possibly. Will you still end up wishing that you had spend a bit more for a 7D? Probably. And you could stay with your EF-S lenses then too...

If you went to the 1DMk2, would you not want the 70-200 f2.8L instead of the f4L? Someone on here raves about them

Out of the bodies mentioned so far only the 7D is comparable, but obviously more expensive. They are almost equal on AF performance when set up correctly.

The 1DMKII(and N) are still very capable cameras and many pros still rate the AF system as being more reliable than the MK3 & 4. The MKII sensor may "only" be 8Mp but if you look beyond the headline figure and actually see the quality of a decent MKII file you'll be more than impressed.

I have both the 7D & MKIIN and sold a 50D last year. I tend to use the 7D more but on the rare occasions i get the 1D out i realise what a superb camera it is all over again. I've thought about selling it several times but the trade values are shot so i've kept it.

The deciding factor is your EF-S stuff IMHO. If it's all quality kit, i would keep it and buy a 7D.

I took all advice on board, wondered about a 7D but at double the money that would hit my lens budget, managed to get a belting deal on a 1D Mk2, collected it yesterday and am well impressed. Am now ordering some tasty L glass to do it justice.
