Very very sad, must be truly awful for his family and friends...

A shame that he felt so bad about being gay that he'd rather be dead.

Sad case, but its dissapointing the 'gay rights' lobby have already jumped on this not for the stigma that *may* exist at the university, a claim that would be warrant investigation, but because the twitter contained the sentence "I saw him making out with a dude." constitutes a hate crime. So said some woman on channel 4 news last night.

How an earth can that on its own constitute a hate crime? its a statement devoid of slurs or prejudice, would "I saw him making out with a girl." constitute one? Of course not.

More divisive crazyness from the self appointed gay rights movement.

"I saw him making out with a dude" appears to be a true statement, I cannot understand the position of the Gay rights lot. Surely this would not be a negative in their eyes.

I feel a lot of these stupid pranks that end in disaster could be avoided if punching someone on the nose was still an option. The pranker might think twice if the prankee could bloody his nose without getting a criminal record.

I think the point is that he would not have been spied upon and filmed for public viewing had he not been homosexual. It was clearly an attempt to humiliate him.

A very tragic case not helped by some of the posters who seem over-keen to jump on the "Anti-Gay Rights" bandwagon rather than empathise with the poor kid and his family.

How do you know they wouldn't have filmed him with a girl?

Did the know his sexuality before setting up the camera?

They probably suspected it.

It is possible the greiving family might like the Gay rights lot to butt out.
Poor choice of word there sorry.

Where is that implied?
I would of thought the humiliation of knowing your peers have all seen your latest bit of bedroom action would be pretty huge regardless of sexuality.

Really? This is pretty obviously a piece of 'banter' that went too far, ended up with an outcome much worse than anyone could have envisaged. There doesn't seem any evidence he wouldn't have done it were he with a munter or a hottie. If this happened to one of my peers then depending on the individual I can imagine there would be a range of reactions from anger and violence to amusement and pride... nobody could foresee that he'd top himself.

Yup, but as this happened where it did expect the perpetrator's lives to be ruined and them sent to gaol for a decade or two.

I'd hardly call it banter.

Most people, gay or straight would be anything from rather pissed off to out for blood. Yes the reaction was extreme, but to pretend something like this is no big deal is laughable.

Even if someone laughed it off initially (probably to keep onside with their peers) I'd imagine the grim realisation that once it's on the internet it's there forever and viewable by anyone who types their name into a search engine would kick in.

C***ish thing to do, by my standards anyway.

I dissagree with that. I am 100% sure that when I were younger my mates would have done the same. In fact if the pictures had come out when they rushed into my hotel room they would probably be on the net now

To be honest his mates would have spied on him regardless of whether it was a guy or a girl. If i am honest it is the kind of thing that my mates would do to me. I'm not saying they are innocent but they could not have forseen this bloke throwing himself off a bridge

it wasn't a surprise for him to commit suicide, most gay people are unhappy with their sexuality.

This guy obviously was happy with the man he was with, perhaps a rare moment where he wasn't at odds with himself

but, some tt goes and ruins it, not by watching and showing a few friends, but by publicly humiliating him.

Enough to commit suicide? Probably, what have you got to live for? Little.

And it was hateful, the twitter post had 'yay' on the end, which does suggest that he wanted to find out this guy was gay, so it was a personal dig, that escalated because this guy was gay.

It's two things that in a way met at the wrong place and the wrong time.

I don't think it takes much of a leap to see that the nature of the flatmates Twitter posts and ultimate action taken was fuelled by a "ohhhh, look my buddy is a hommo" attitude. The BBC haven't shown all the details that appear elsewhere.

The people saying it's no different to saying he's making out with a girl are showing the same naivety shown by people saying is the same as Brit.

If anyone wants to test the idea set up a false account on ph and post asking for nice places to take your gay partner on a date...see how long before it resembles a school play ground with regards the "witty" replys.

I'd jail the guy that broadcast it.

Is that the normal punishment for filming someone without permission?

To be hnest I think this went way beyond filming without permission, what they then went on to do with the film and by the comments made on twitter as reported in the linked article ceratinly appear to indicate a homophobic action.

Whether or not they could have foreseen this would end in their poor victim's suicide or not is imaterial, they would certainly have known the impact this would have had on his life at the University and still they did it. I don't think from what I have read that this was a joke gone too far, it really feels like it was done with malice.

Good Christian boy, not come out to his parents yet, worried to death about the reaction from his family and certain bigoted relatives, never been in trouble in his life, suffers horrifying humiliation as a private and intimate moment is put up on the internet for the world to see, his family probably sent the link to the video and can't cope with it? Hardly the shock of a lifetime.
