Looking for help here ...
Just taken delivery of a Boxster with the Porsche sound pack ( ie, not the basic system, but not the Bose system ). When listening to it, it sounds OK, but not what I expected The door speakers hardly emit anything other than bass - which is what the dealship say and the literature, but it sounds as if all the sound is coming from the front and doesn't give much depth. I once had a mark 3 Ford Escort with one speaker in the centre of the dash, and it sounded almost the same.
Any advice please ...

I think this is entirely normal.
You are right, the door speakers are basically low frequency only. Our ears cannot tell which direction bass is coming from, only mid and high range frequencies. As a result, in a Boxster, the sound only comes from the dash board in front of you. It doesn't envelope you.
I try not to let it bother me (I have the same hi-fi as you in my Boxster S). Top ranking hi-fi components for the home feature 2 speakers only, both in front of the listener. You need this arrangement to produce a convincing soundstage, that is a good stereo picture. Traditional hi-fi buffs would scoff at the idea of surround sound (for listening to music, cinema is different). So maybe the Boxster copies the home hi-fi ideal?

Porsche stereos are shite. I have the same sound pack as the pair of you. Shite.

Take the roof off.

Switch off the stereo.

Play the musical instrument that is the exhaust note above 4500rpm...

The mini disc system in my wife's mini is much better than the Porsche (Becker) 6 CD unit in my 996. But if I change anything it will be the exhaust !!!!!

Thanks for the help - I have now played around with it for a few days - the radio sounds far better than the Cd player - god knows why. Like you say - top off, CD player off, and foot down ...
Wish I'd spent the money on something else.

Alternatively, get the Rear Speaker Kit imported from the good ole US of A, which hooks into either the head unit or AMP.

I done this last year to my MY03 Boxster with PSP, and it gives a definate improvement over the std speaker configuration.

Plenty of references on http://forum.boxa.net for procurement and installation.

I know exactly what you mean, took delivery of my boxster 550 2 weeks ago and this came with the middle of the road speakers as standard, I dread to think what the basic speakers are like (i.e. the one below yours and mine) I really wish I had gone for the Bose upgrade but I remember it being mega money, already spent enough as it is. Is there a way of configuring the system so that the sound appears to come from all around (i.e. surround sound)

I had Harmon Kardon Speaker upgrade in my last Beemer, very good but after a while wasn't sure it was worth the money, hence the reason for keeping with the standard kit this time around. I agree with the whole idea of listening to the sound from the exhaust, what a beast - that is music to my ears.

The problem with the BOSE upgrade is that although the stereo is perfectly good IIRC you then have to do without the storage box that comes with the Wind Deflector - and I find that very useful...
