I am looking to change my current car for something larger, currently considering an Audi/BMW estate but older Range Rovers also fall into my price range. With relatively high fuel and tax costs aside are there any other common faults I should be aware of, or any large bills that I should factor into my search. Will an LPG powered 4.4 V8 offer similar running costs to a TD6 version. Your thoughts and comments would be much appreciated.

Tax is OK at £245 as long as it's pre March 2006.

Thirsty though. I get 19mpg on average. 24mpg at best on a run.

A lot of parts are very cheap compared with BMW / Audi.

Loads of usefull stuff at:

I have a 2002 4.4 V8 with LPG conversion. Out of a 65 litre tank around town I get 175 miles. On the motorway I get 225 - 250 miles.
It's not great but I tried a TDv6 and it felt gutless, the petrol V8 for me was a better option.

I have just got a 4.4 Vogue.

Seems like a nice car, drives very well.

Few issues so far, found some parts are cheap (brake caliper £140) but others are mega money - wing mirror £500+.

Still, so far (touch wood) seems like just niggles.

This. The V8 is immeasurably superior to the log burner. Ours wasn't LPGed, but 24mpg on a run from a 2.4t semi-detatched house didn't feel too bad in my book.

It's an impressive bit of kit. LPG will give you 16-17mpg at about 60p/l.

Mines a gassed 4.4
Getting 18.9Mpg from the onboard computer

260-300 miles from 95l of gas.
Paying currently 54ppl.
Couldn't be happier.

Unfortunately the onboard computer works out as if it was on petrol and it is optimistic at that, if you work out your figures on the lower end you are getting 12 mpg which is the norm.

Purchased a 2003 RR about 6 weeks ago. Two weeks of great driving until the alternator went. Have to atke off the front end to replace the alternator so ended up changing more bits. Rad was begining to leak so replaced. New water pump just in case and new hoses. Cam cover was leaking so gaskets replaced and I powder coated the camcovers red. Then thought sod it, might as well update it to the 2010 look and am doing that now as well. Front/rear lights, front rear bunpers and new 20" wheels.

The cars been in peices for longer than I've had a chance to drive it, but hopefully should have it ready by next week and won't have any issues anytime soon. (touch wood). It's also an LPG as well.

We filmed a rough guide on what to look out for on RR's so when I have time I'll edit it together and upload it to youtube.

I'd check your LPG setup. Unless you drive everywhere at 90mph, 12 mpg is excessive. My 16-17mpg is based upon trip meter distance versus fuel purchased (the OBC says 20.5mpg - some hope) with a mix of motorway driving, local roads and some urban. I never drive faster than 75mph indicated.

Interestingly, on the Le Mans run last year, I saw 13mpg cruising at 85mph on the Autoroutes trying to keep up with two Cayenne V8s (both of which saw 18mpg).

I have a 95 litre tank of which 75 or so is useable, depending upon temperature. It requires a certain amount of unuseable fuel to maintain sufficient pressure to supply the system.

Have a 1996 RR 4.6 for sale, see add.

On big wheels 21 on a run, on Normal RR wheels 23+ @56mph, round town 11-13.

Most problems with RR are electric , mine has just developed a rear door that does not want to unlock or lock, its not as expensive to own a older one, mine has cost me in three years only normal maintenance, ie brakes and services. so long as there are no clonks or whines and no smoking rattleing engines they will go forever. Check the chassis for rust as well.
I have just bought a new one , I could not bring myself to buy a car again.
